Back in the day Bruce had a bunch of shows that were sent out over the radio.
Why did the stop happening?

I think a radio broadcast show during this tour would be awesome.

again...why did they stop though???

Did Radio Stations just put their foot down or is it Bruce's people. Was it a way of letting people hear what Bruce and the band were all about and to get them to come out to shows and buy the albums when he was still kind of new ?

I would think it would help sales if they did more of them. It's not like he does those three + hour shows anymore so it can't be the length of time it would be on the station.

Sprngsteen did radio broadcasts on all his tours, from Greetings up thru Darkness. The only exception was the Aug '76 to Mar '77 'Lawsuit Tour', where there was a legal injunction in play that effectively prevented him from doing radio broadcasts (Mike Appel owned the rights). Had that legal impediment not been in play at the time then Springsteen is likely to have done one or two broadcasts on that tour as well.

The 1973-78 radio braodcasts were great promotional tools for Springsteen....the downside, of course, was that these shows provided the growing vinly bootleg industry of that period with fantastic material to exploit.

The were two interrelated reasons why there were no radio broadcasts during the RIVER and BITUSA Tours.

1) Springsteen didn't need the publicity at that point....100% sellout tours and #1 chart albums with hit singles as well.

2) Concern during 1980-85 about major volume bootlegging of the potential broadcasts.

Springsteen had been vinyl bootlegged starting in late 75 and it had been growing - but they didn't take it too seriously until shortly after the Darkness Tour ended. That's when a huge surge of Springsteen vinly boot titles appeared and when a lot of small 'mom and pop' shops all over the USA began selling them - the Springsteen radio broadcasts were popular and were being pressed in quantities that were getting CBS nervous.

Then the shit really hit the fan in mid 1979 when some high quality studio tapes from the just-starting River Sessions 'escaped'. That's when Landau/Springsteen said "enough" and joined forces with CBS in Federal lawsuits, one in Aug '79 against a major manufacturer on the west coast and one in Nov '79 against a major distributor on the east coast. 'Live at The Roxy' and 'Live at Winterland' were among titles cited in the complaints. These cases were ultimately settled out of court if my memory serves me correctly.

This did not stop the problem, as these bootleggers were quite distributed during that era. There was another major warehouse bust in NJ in April 1980 (many Springsteen boots confiscated) and then, yet again, some quality Springsteen studio tapes 'escpaped' from the spring 1980 River Sessions. So, yeah, they (Springsteen/CBS) were very, very sensitive about all this during the 1979-1985 period. CBS were dying for a live album from Bruce and they couldn't get one.....until finally the Box Set in '86.

Now if he broadcast the last show of the tour via the web then the world could follow along. Why not take advantage of the new technology. They could stream it off of the gov't web site and even sell tour merch, downloads, it definately would beat the sales of any CBS after the fact produced DVD package.

How fitting that would be in all the circumstances

  Dream baby dream

Live in Barcelona I believe was over the air at one point, not live of course...

I guess my biggest question is we seem to be singling out Mr. Springsteen, but I'd contest that its an industry wide thing. How often do you hear radio broadcast concerts in general anymore? I can't really think of any besides landmark shows, ie. I think Live8 or whatever the one a few years ago was on the radio. Sometimes there's abridged edited shows late at night on the weekends or something with nobodys.

When in Hollywood visit Universal Studios
(Ask for Babs)

am i missing the bleeding obvious? have just put a new thread up re this..............
