I'm quite perplexed by this as well, and rather disappointed. The reason I've been a fan since the early 80s is not because I want to re-live Born to Run in concert over and over, but because he has constantly stretched himself and his audience in new and interesting ways (most significantly in the Seeger Sessions tour). This seems to be a nostalgia tour, and it's not exactly capturing my interest much. :-(
I hated WOAD when it came out and was glad I couldn't afford to go see him live. Then, WOAD grew on me, my brother called me and said he'd pay if I drive, we got GA's 2 weeks before the show and now of course he's not playing much off WOAD. I'd like it if he never played "The Rising" again. Where's "Lucky Day", "Life Itself"??
I think they enjoyed playing a lot of the old stuff on the last leg of the Magic tour, and being back out on the road again so soon, have just carried on. They aren't getting any younger, the tour is unlikely to sell many more copies of the album, and are just going out there and enjoying themselves.

Here's an idea - if he's looking for signs and people to stump the band then make signs requesting unplayed songs from WOAD.
I figured he's doing it backwards. Most tours start out strict and get loose as the tour goes on but since his expert drummer is going away he decided to start out loose while he can. I figure when Jay takes over full time the sets will have to be more static, just to take it easy on the kid.

ass...

My point was Jay can't be expected to know everything Bruce ever written, recorded or listened to the way Max is. So chances are when they hit europe, you will see a much more defined rigid setlist/groups of songs he pulls from. So where other tours start out with 7 or 8 new songs then slowly loosen up and become only 2 or 3 new songs with a whole bunch of wild cards. He is doing the tour backward because he just can't call out Roulette or Loose Ends and expect Jay to know it, but he wanted it to be part of the tour.

I suspect when Jay steps in you will see a 35 or so song list they can pull from, I'm just speculating that maybe then they will be more apt to play new songs seeing as Europe is generally a better audience for new material and Jay can make it his own.

As for the 'greatest hits' argument, you people would all be jizzing yourselves last year if you heard that Seeds would be played again, you were all raving about the tom morello GOTJ electric or when he busted out a classic cover... but it happens regularly and everyone gets upset and/or bored. Theres no pleasing you assholes!

This tour is really odd if you ask me... I was hoping it would be more like the difference between the BITUSA and TOL -- entirely new setlists, different instrumentation, etc. The WOAD album had a lot of potential in concert, but it's like he just changed his mind. Is there another tour in the past where he did so little of the album he was touring for?
Stark differnce between BITUSA and TOL really? Really? The only real difference was who he was sleeping with.

The reason he is not playing more of WOAD is that he learned from LT/HT. During LT/HT period it sent him into a funk that the audience didn't respond to the music.

Same thing w/ WOAD. The material doesn't hold up to the rest of the catalog and can only be played in small doses over the entire tour. That is why you see a song here and there w/ some exceptions like OP.

So what did he learn. Play the new stuff in small doses and the rest of time have a great time playing everything else.

I didn't use the word 'stark', but that's probably the right word. He added a horn section for the ToL tour, which added a significant change it sound too all the songs, and looking at the first shows in 1988 (Centrum), I count 13 songs that either were new to the ToL album or not previously played:

Tunnel of Love
Be true (only played once on BITUSA tour)
Two Faces
All that Heaven will Allow
Roulette
Brilliant Disguise
Spare Parts
Tougher Than the Rest
I'm a Coward
One Step Up
Part Man Part Monkey
Walk Like a Man
Light of Day

That's half the show! The first stop of the WOAD tour had pretty much the same instrumentation (plus two underutilized backup singers), and only 6 new songs. That number has gone down since then.

The reason I've been a fan for so many years is because of the constant reinvention (the acoustic tours, the Segger Sessions tour, yes, even the LT/HT tour). Yes, there is a lot to like this tour, but it's really just a continuation of the Magic tour.

Well it can either go "crap album, crap tour and playing crap city (London) or isn't playing London cause it is not a crap city.

Which is it?

Rick, Hyde Park was a bloody good show and increased Bruce's kudos and nouveau cool in the UK no-end. Why is an open air festivalised gig less worthy than say last year at the Emirates or the O2 the year before?
Concerning WOAD, 'Outlaw Pete' sounds so, so much better live, although WOAD itself is still a weak track live or in the studio. I was hoping for Kingdom of Days or My Lucky Day (but absolutely not QOTS, even taking into account German humour!)
Just been reading the biog 'Glory Days' and raeding the set lists from the mid-80s in fact little has changed and there is a need for a big overhaul unless it is to slip into Vegas Greatest Hits parody and I would hate it if that was Bruce's destiny.
