That's not weird. It's a real quote of Bruce. The song is called that, "From Small Things (Big Things One Days Come)". It's on his Essentials CD on the bonus disc. They say by way of Dave Edmunds because he recorded it before Bruce did.

Also, that writer sounds like an Italian guy and I think everyone knows the Italian Bruce fans have the hardest core love for him. For Bruce.
That was in the 84 election when Reagan was doing campaigning in New Jersey and he said something about the "dreams of young Americans are in the songs of Bruce Springsteen." Come on. Gimme a break Ronald Reagan. He wasn't any Bruce fan I don't think. Everyone knows he just said it to get votes. But, hey, he won! I don't remember if he ever quoted exactly the song "Born In The U.S.A." but if he did what a dummy cos it's NOT a patriotic song as everyone here already figured out a long tiume ago I'm sure.
Oh plus, believe it or not, even though I am over the hill of 40, I am pretty new to the internet. I've resisted it for years but a few weeks ago my daughter-in-law showed me how much Bruce info and bootlegs you can get online that I went out and bought a computer and I've already downloaded about twenty bootlegs, even though some I can't seem to get to play.
Ok. No sarcasm (Happy now Ev2???) here. When boots are being discussed, it's serious business.

"Hey Gerk, what is this FLAC thing that I keep reading about here?"

FLAC = Free Lossless Audio Codec
What that basically means is, that unlike MP3 (which compresses the audio into tiny little files by eliminating certain audio bits), FLAC copresses - but without any loss of audio. It is a format almost used exculsively for trading of boots so that one can convert the files to .wav format and create a perfect replica of the original source. No quality loss.

"Ok Gerk, where can I find out more info about this FLAC stuff, so I can get educated more and learn to do things the SPL way?"

I'm so glad you asked Nabraskan. On the main forums page, go to the bottom area (also known as "the basement") and click on the "files and formats" thread. Go through them and you will find that you are not the only to have asked about this. As well, you will find a lot of useful info there. Even us "SPL vets" visit there once in a while (we're getting old too - but Eugene is the oldest. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE is older than him.). By the way, if it's boots you seek, the basement is the place to go... well, that and the bootleg request thread. wink

"Gee, thanks alot Gerk! You are swell. So, can I play FLAC files just like my MP3s?"

Yes, and no. Yes you can, but it involves a lot more effort and knowledge than MP3. This is due to the fact that MP3 playibility is so common its so easy to have SOMETHING that can plaay them. FLAC, on the other hand is not so universally adopted, and thus, takes a bit of research to understand how to play them directly (it involves a plug-in for certain media players - eg: WinAmp has a plug-in to play FLAC directly). One of the most common ways to "get that music outta those FLAC files" is to decompress them first (convert to .wav files) and burn an audio CD with the .wav's. Or, you can convert the .wav's to MP3 if you want to listen to your boots on an iPhone/iPod/etc. If you do this, just don't post that you do. There are "some" here that are very strong believers that boots should NEVER be coverted to MP3. They will eat for breakfast if they sniff that you practise this. But then, some others really don't give a shit about what someone else thinks they should do with their music and how they can listen to it, and convert anyway. JUST MAKE SURE YOU NEVER EVER TRADE MP3 BOOTS WITH ANYONE. There are damn good reasons for this, and if you investigate the basement, you will eventually find out what they are.

"Whoa Gerk. I never realised it was this complicated. I'm begining to feel a bit intimidated."

That's ok Nebraskan. At first, it does seem complicated, and intimidating, but the more familuar you get with it all, the easier it becomes, and the more your confidence will grow. Hell, you might even tape a show or two down there in Governantor-land. But one thing at a time, eh?

"Wow Gerk! I can not believe how helpful you have been! Is there some way I could possibly repay you for all this knowledge?"

Ha ha ha Nebraskan... that's not necessary. This will get you started, but the real work is up to you. (This impresses traders too - opens up doors for more boots). Remember, if you are going to convert to MP3, do it ONLY for yourself. Heed that rule, and everything else will fall into place.

And have FUN! Collecting/trading/downloading/etc boots is a HOBBY. It's meant to be fun and enjoyable. And don't forget, there are lots of boot DVDs too. So go nuts.

Peace
