EMI Publishing Deal Boosts Sony’s 2018 Music Revenue Projections

As part of the Sony Corporation earnings report for the second fiscal quarter of 2018, the music division reported revenues down around 1% to 203.9 billion yen (around $1.83 billion), with recorded-music down 3% and physical sales down 26%. The upside is that streaming was up around 8% for the quarter and up 20% for the first six months of the fiscal year. Operating income margins are about 16.5%.

For the year, Sony Corporation is forecasting music revenues of 820 billion yen ($7.3 billion), which it has revised up after the company’s acquisition of EMI Music Publishing, a transaction that was recently approved by the European Union and is expected to close by the end of the year. The deal led the company to move up its estimate 8% or 60 billion yen ($529.2 million).

Also during that six-month period, overall music segment revenues are up 3%, recorded music is down 2% and physical is down 30%. For the quarter profits showed a 3% decline but were up 11% for the six months — a source close to the situation said that figure would be higher but for expenses related to the EMI valuation. The company also said that the impact of exchange rates and new accounting standards, along with the dip in physical sales, played a role the revenue and profit declines.

Big sellers in the quarter included Travis Scott (pictured above), Luke Combs, George Ezra, Camila Cabello and Calvin Harris. Big releases projected for later in the year include new albums by Barbra Streisand, Little Mix, Olly Murs and a Springsteen Broadway record.

I snooze glided off my chair with the annoucement of this non-event. Hopefully, our man will throw away the carpet slippers and cardigan after December 16th, get into the gym and morph back into the rock star we remember with fond memories.

Glad I am not the only one feeling this way.  I was excited/happy for him to do the Broadway "thing" but it has run its course and I am tired of it.  Mostly because it's the same thing over and over again.  Kind of like the anti-Springsteen concert.

I listened to one of the boots of it, enjoyed the listen, but will never go back to it. I don't even have interest in the Netflix release.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who attended the show and feels it was a waste of time. I was there, and I wished it wouldn't end. I doubt that the Netflix special or the live album will be able to capture 10% of the essence of the show, but I hope I'm wrong.

I'm pretty exited about the Netflix special. It's in my calendar since it was announced.

Also I'm not sure, if I really want the Rock Star from the past back. Don't get me wrong, I would give a lot to see '78 Bruce or '81 Bruce or ... But the man gets older as we all do. He is 68. Much better in shape than all other 68 years old people I know, but still.

I can imagine, it's time to slow down things. He has to find a fitting show for a 70+ year old guy. I'm sure he will find a way to get older as an artist with dignity. And that will not happen when he tries to copy the shows from the past 10 years.

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to have seen one of the Broadway shows in person.  It must have been a fantastic experience.  It's just not something I would want to listen to multiple times in multiple formats.  Maybe if I saw it live I would want to but alas, I didn't want to plunk down that kind of cash.

I did get to see the show. It was very moving to me being a fan for a long time.  Buying this release would be like listening to a book on tape, one and done.

So I’m not buying it rather I’ll wait for the mega box set of Nebraska / Born in the USA.
