Ok I have secured the doco now but still waiting for the album to arrive.

need advice. Should I listen to the album first, before I watch the doco?? Or just watch the doco now?

Cheers,

Hazy

I would have liked to be offered more insight into how the band arrived at arrangements.

Agreed, it wouldve been great to see how they worked it out from the first run through from Bruce to the live take.

This "documentary" is a major disappointment. Zimny has remade Western Stars, which is inexcusable given that he spent 4 days in studio with the band as they figured out the arrangements for most of the album. Western Stars was an interesting concert film. Letter To You is basically a series of videos for the album, interspersed with some tantalising glimpses of the band at work. I wish he (and Bruce) had focused on the creativity that must have been floating around, not the finished product – we got that on the record.

I really loved the film. Sure they could have done something more in depth, to show the creative process from start to finish. But that is why we are never ever fully satisfied anymore. I am just glad Bruce released the film, and gave us this insight in the proces. Seeing the band work together in these fragments, it's just pure pleasur. So ask yourself, why is it you always want more?

I've seen this on the Archive releases, the official recordings, the films, the concerts. People just feel the need to complain, as it is nowadays never enough, never good enough. Just be glad we still get new music, and old music as well.

Surely, you may be disappointed, but that is just your opinion, based on your expectations propably.

Kinsey just explained it before your post:

I think this time around most of us are not complaining too much about the music.

But the accompanying video piece was advertised as a "documentary" - which it simply is not.

It contains music videos as a companion piece to the album. And some snippets of the work in the studio. The "music videos" are not even showing the band playing live. They are cut randomly.

Nobody is comparing "Letter to you" to "Darkness".

But given that Apple sells the video as a documentary, some expectations might have been justified, after "The Promise".

But - ok - I won't complain. At least it was nice seeing the band.

And I think there was at least one scene when most of us smiled...

When they raise their glasses and shout "San Siro" ... "Four nights!"

Since I seem to have started the complaining about the "documentary" I'll just add this bit in. Zimny was asked to film but told to "stay out of the way" of the creative process. So in essence, filming from some distance, he can't encumber what is happening around him and in front of him. And to track the development of the arrangement of a song might get boring in a hurry for those with little musical knowledge. Case in point, unlike many artists, Bruce has never released demos of songs. He's released finished outtakes only on the box sets. As co-producer of the film, it's his call about what he wishes to unveil about how he works.

Anyhow, I just wanted to play devil's advocate for my own comments after reading this piece on Backstreets.

How would you advertise this video? To me a documentary is something that gives me a little more insight, in this case in the creative process. Bruce explains things about the songs, supported by old fragments and pictures.

Anyway, what anybody else things of the video is there own right to judge. I just feel we've become a bunch of complainer, never satisfied with anything that is released. That's what my earlier response was actually about.

Some good stuff in that interview.  I copied that interview to notepad a few days ago and included it as an info file in the Documentary's folder.
