We've been hearing for a while the possibility of a "Tracks II" being released at some point. It was my assumption that "Tracks" pretty much wiped out most of the unreleased studio material that was sitting in the vault, but some of the stuff I've read lately has suggested otherwise. Of course, there is presumably tons of live stuff sitting there, but I'm just talking about studio stuff here.

Is there any kind of feeling how much might unreleased studio material might be remaining, paricularly the '73 to '84 period? One disc's worth of stuff? Four discs? 10 discs?

Just the studio cuts of all the stuff he's only played live over the years will take up a ton of room: Because the Night, Fire, LOHAD, Another Thin Line, Code of Silence, American Skin, etc etc. Assuming we get all that stuff, which we won't.

I wonder if he ever seriously considered including covers on albums before Seeger. Like Trapped or Follow That Dream. Studio versions of them might be interesting.

Some generous Springsteen fan on this board stumbled across a studio version of American Skin. I don't recall all the specifics, but I think he ran across it at a used record/CD store. It was a promo copy or something. Not an official release.
Pro-Life or Pro-War? Make up your mind.

Hopefully they stay that way.

Some are ok, Losin' kind, some of the born in the usa tracks like downbound train, child bride etc. spanish eyes, all i need. it'd be nice to see some of these dug up and remastered.
The sweetest songs don't last too long on Broken radios.

Yes, he mentions it in the recent Rolling Stone interview, that he will - or might - get to a Tracks II.

He ALSO, b.t.w, mentions he almost made a full album when he made "Streets of Philadelphia": That he had some songs he found "very good", but left it with a dissatisfied feeling as he did not have enough for an album. I've read rumors that he has another album pretty much ready NOW - and it COULD be he has re-found those "Philly Session" tracks, if I may call it that?!

Definently! Or he could be joking in some weird way...? Maybe a joke like that would make sense to you guys from the USA - that shares the context much more than I/we do here in Norway?

THIS IS WHAT HE HAS SAID, acc to RS of Nov 1st:
- About "Tracks": "There's probably another Tracks sitting in the vault that I'll get to at some point" (p. 54, near-bottom 3rd column).

- a "Philly Sessions +more" album:
RS: "The creative roll you're on now is relatively recent, given the scope of your career. There was a period eight to ten years ago where you were still making records and putting them away."
BS: "Yeah, I made one for "Streets of Philadelphia" that I didn't put out, which I'd like to. It was interesting, it had a lot of little loops and things. A good record, written pretty well. It wasn't a complete record in the end, which is why I would sit down and feel great for four or five songs and in the end get up with some sense of dissatifaction" (p. 55 bottom 3rd column and contiunes on p. 56).

Hope this helps.
What I find interesting is during the Dave Marsh interview he talked about being less self critical about the songs he'd written and recorded. I see "Tracks" as a begining in that process. He let those songs out of the dark. Now, He writes less epic type songs, some might say as a writer he's slipped compared to the old days. I agree that the new stuff isn't "as good" as the old material, but it's nice that he's issuing more material than he used to.

Eventually, Tracks 2 will be released. I'd say his Sony contract may have allot to do with the New Bruce we are seeing.

No mid-life crisis.

Springsteen's new 10-yr contract with SonyBMG became effective July 1, 2005. It was his 3rd consecutive 10-yr deal with the company, only this time the money was much bigger (USD $112 million), as was Sprignsteen's committment of product delivery to the company over the contract term. It is my understanding that Bruce has committed to delivering 4 cds of "core product" over the ten years + about 10-12 cds worth of non-core, special project products over the contract period. So I think it's going to be a good decade....there will be something for every taste. I think we've already seen such in the past 10 months.

Since the contract signing we've already seen 3 special projects products released....the BTR 3Oth (Nov 2005), the Live Hammersmith (Feb 2006) and the Seeger Sessions (Apr 2006).....and there is a 4-cd TRACKS-2 well in the pipeline for sometime in the next 2-3 years. Toby Scott is working on it.

As far as core product is concerned (i.e. new recordings of new Springsteen compositions)...Bruce has said he's got nearly an album's worth of E Steet Band-type material ready....so that's good news.

Woke up this morning MY house was cold

Not that I've done much digging into this, but I haven't found anything else to corroborate Earthslayer's details. Everything else is essentially consistent, but less specific. I'd love to know his source(s). wink

$112 Million is a lot of money, but consider that it includes both 10 years licensing rights to the entire back-catalogue (with anniversary releases) and (if Earthslayer is correct) many new releases from an artist with a very loyal audience.

There's a lot of stuff in the vaults I would like to see released. If he does a new tracks I hope he uses some of the material that's in the "live" vaults as well. Adding live nuggets such as It's My Life, Walking in the Rain, Fortunate Son and Follow that dream. Alternate versions of well known studio tracks would be nice as well, You Can Look or Blood Brothers spring to mind.

Most of all I'm, naively, hoping for some decent liner notes, not just lyrics. Last time Backstreets Magazine had to provide them.

Unsatisfied Heart is a demo with a drum machine and Janie needs a Shooter, I believe, is from a rehearsal. Anything different would be great, I hope I'm wrong.
