I'll never forget that 2012 show. I drove up to Ottawa with my 17 year-old daughter. During the ride up, she asked me if Bruce had any songs that sucked LOL. I told her that he has one clunker that is really dumb called Queen Of The Supermarket. Told her what it was about and she laughed. She asked if he ever played it and I said "no, and he never will." Doesn't he play it that night! - by sign request - for a woman who worked around the corner at a Sobeys. The next day they had an article in the paper about her. On the ride back home, my daughter says "This is why you love Bruce, isn't it?" Yup!

Great story!!  I was there too, and strangely enjoyed the performance and his apparent like that song. Perhaps it holds special meaning 🤷‍♂️.

I have a feeling he is going to play a full band version of it on Saturday night.

I found an old reference of Bruce explaining the song....

Springsteen told the Observer Music Monthly January 2009 the story behind this song, which concerns a man pining over a check out girl. He explained: "They opened up this big, beautiful supermarket near where we lived. Patti and I would go down, and I remember walking through the aisles - I hadn't been in one in a while - and I thought this place is spectacular... it's a fantasy land! And then I started to get into it. I started looking around and hmmm - the subtext in here is so heavy! It's like, 'Do people really want to shop in this store or do they just want to screw on the floor?'" [laughs] Springsteen added: "In the States they're sort of shameless, the bounty in them is overflowing. So the sexual subtext in the supermarket; well, perhaps, it's just twisted me." Springsteen concluded: "I'm telling you, it's there! So I came home, said: 'Wow, the supermarket is fantastic, it's my new favorite place. And I'm going to write a song about it!' If there's a supermarket and all these things are there, well, there has to be a queen. And if you go there, of course there is. There's millions of them, so it's kind of a song about finding beauty where it's ignored or where it's passed by."

I dunno…..  These things that the “twisted” elder Bruce finds inspirational…. I hope he doesn’t suddenly find “beauty where it’s ignored or where it’s passed by” in his next visit to his proctologist.   (Not to demean all you Springsteen loving colorectal surgeons out there).  Some romances are better left unimagined, unspoken, and unsung.

That's Bruce covering for himself. I bet he went to the market with Patti and there was a smokin' hot checkout girl and he wrote a song about it but had to make this other stuff up to not piss off the missus.

It was far from an epic setlist tonight in Ottawa, but it was still a great quality, high energy show. The crowd was more energized than I'd ever seen in that venue on prior occasions. Sunny Day replaced Atlantic City by sign request. Twist and Shout was set-listed but was not played. My seat was behind the stage, front row, directly behind Jake and the horns. All five men in the E Street Horns saw my Kitty's Back sign and gave me a thumbs up, a finger point, a smile or a wave, but Bruce never caught it, unfortunately for me. A few members of the backstage crew laughed and took photos of the sign. It is an interesting perspective to watch a show from where I was seated. Of course, I never sat down. The horn men were a delight to watch from 15 feet away. They were having a ball with each other, they were animated and they continuously turned around to ham it up with us folks in the (back) front rows. In all the Bruce shows I've seen over the years, that interaction was truly unique. It kind of made my night. Jake was super cool. Often, after he returned to his spot after nailing an epic sax solo, I gave him my "I'm not worthy" bows. He saw me doing it, and returned the love, with chested heart taps and blown kisses. At the end of the show, he pointed at us again, waved, gave us a thumbs up, and said goodbye in his gestures. I don't know how to say it exactly - but his uncle would be super proud of how he's filling his shoes with such class and dignity. So many cool things were seen from the perspective I had. When the E Street Horns or the E Street Choir were not required to be on stage for a song, they were right down below us, in back of the stage, having a great time and enjoying each other's company. Some of them danced with each other, sang the songs they were not up on stage for - Backstreets, for instance - and the comradery between them was vivid and very visible. It got to be a bit distracting - because I wanted to keep my focus on what Bruce was killing on stage - but even the techs and roadies who wandered left to right below me could be seen mouthing the words to the songs being played on stage as they went about their duties. Once the house lights came up for the encores, Jon Landau appeared below us. He headed stage left right before Tenth Avenue started, and when Bruce peeled off his vest, he noticed Landau standing there and threw it at him, catching him right in the face. From what I could tell, Jon was not expecting that, and he had a good laugh. From there, Bruce circled the GA pit area as he always does during this song, going from the right side of the arena to the left. As he did this, Landau also made his way right, beneath us behind the stage, to the right side to meet Bruce again, which was beyond our view. I noticed many other details on this night, from where I was seated, but I will need to go through the pics and clips I have before I can post more details.

Thanks to Q2 for the setlist and to CrookedCrutch for the report. Really appreciated.

With no tour premiere the count for different songs played on the 23/24 tour still remains at 108.

Bruce added a little to the story, saying how the Castiles stayed together for four years and it's tough for bands to stay together. "Simon don't like Garfunkel, Hall don't like Oates." He had mentioned this in a few of the interviews he did recently for "Road Diary."

May have been an audible as Bruce shouted to Roy, "Santa."

"Ottawa is on fire baby! Thank you for being an incredible audience. Damn! That's it! I'm moving to Canada baby!" Bruce said as he looked around the arena in approval.
27. I'll See You in My Dreams.
"Ottawa the E Street Band loves you. Thanks for an incredible night!"

Show over at 10:17 p.m. for 2:35 show, maybe the shortest show of the tour.

Thank you to Angela Valente for your great live stream, Loved your enthusiasm and singing. Also to Jeff Griffin for your live stream.

Next show: Bruce and Patti will be performing at the Standup for Heroes Benefit in New York City on Monday.

Next E Street Band show: Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg. Bruce's first ever show in that city.

Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory

Sitting behind the stage, or right on the side defintely gives you a new perspective, and yes a chance to interact a little with the band members not involved at the moment. Michelle Moore and I had a thing going at Nassau II last year, haha. And watching Steve's guitar tech was very interesting(Steve was having a BAD night at that show). I've sat behind the stage a lots of indoor Bruce shows, and a few other artists too, it's a lot better than one may expect!

Bruce seemed to be in a rush to get outta Dodge… gap between main set and encore was small.  Common complaint has been that the audience wasn’t on its feet too much.  I was up in the rafters and watched more than one person navigate the stairs with two hands on the railing going up or down.  Getting old really sucks.

It was a strong performance imo.  Could have done without Santa for something else.   Hope this won’t be the last one!
