To my ears, this is a crooner ala Tony Bennett style.

I'll be honest with you, I wasn't expecting this.

And I've never found much of anything redeeming about Tony Bennett's style!

This song has yet to grab me the way "Hello Sunshine" has. The topic has basically the same as "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" and the music is too reminiscent of a lot of what I didn't care for about WOAD.

Honestly, I would have preferred to hear the entire Western Stars disc from start to finish - as a whole - rather than selected tracks. Hearing random songs ahead of the album's release can really throw a fan off. To me, it's like, "Is this the best stuff on it, or merely a random sample whetting the appetite for something better?"

Agree with a lot of that. Hello Sunshine is better. Whilst I find this enjoyable and I did straight up, and I like it when he really sings (coz a lotta people don’t think he can) it’s essentially a pop tune ala Girls...

also prefer hearing the album all at once...they shoulda stopped after one teaser/taster track, Hello Sunshine and then the album release mid June.

Cheers,

Hazy

Actually, voice sounds like Bowie. Odd, but true.

You must have had a Saturday tasting.  Aren't you supposed to spit most of it out?

What I really dislike about a song like this is how bare-bones the lyrics are. He took the title and appended "walking away" to it and added one more lyric, "look what you've done" and repeats them over and over. Ok, there is one decent section he probably dug out of his notebook: "The book of love holds its rules
disobeyed by fools, disobeyed by fools."  If the rest of the album is like this, then he is really written out, lyrics-wise.

I agree. There is no meat lyric wise. No lines to hang anything onto. By that's pop.

To play devil's advocate, we all know Bruce can clutter up a melody with stream of consciousness lyrics that can sometimes have the opposite effect. The trick is to find the right balance.

I'd be surprised if the rest of the album is as vapid but I don't think that a writer as great as Bruce can lose the ability to craft good lines. The songs are being described as "character-driven" and some of the other titles hold hope for that.

But like you, Frank, I'm waiting for them! Where are they?
