SPL's Must-Have Bootleg List

We've talked about it in the past. Now let's do it.
While I'm open to ideas about how to do the list -- and will surely change the format and criteria as we go along -- let's start off with this premise: Let's name the Top 5 bootlegs for each tour, with as many as 5 more suggestions. The sound has to be pretty damn good for a boot to make the list, but sound quality is not the sole criteria. We'll weigh in the performance (i.e., the energy level, the setting, the setlist, etc.) because that matters, too. Otherwise we'd all be listening to the Atlanta Rising boot, which won't even make the list.
I'll keep a running list here at the top of what the consensus seems to be for each tour. It will change, of course.
Anybody who wants other ideas can probably dig through this thread someday for suggestions that fell short. There are going to be a lot of excellent boots that don't make the list.
So let's get started.
Let's use a slightly modified version of Patrick's list as a jumping off point. It will be modified swiftly.

I think we need to add the dates of the boots (ex., 1975-02-05 Prodigal Son at the Main Point)
One of the hardest things will be figuring out which version to cite as the best, but I think that's crucial. If we can't decide, we can say it's a toss-up. But let's try to make this easier on people who don't want to look at eight different versions of Passaic '78 and wonder which one to get. I also think that once we get this list done, we should make sure we keep all the shows on it seeded on Jungleland and uploaded as a series on ABMS. Not everyone has them all.

Update of my yesterday's list after some more thought went into it:

Of course it would be great if others also provided top 5/10 lists but otherwise everyone should just pitch in ideas for their personal favourites. And later, there should be some ugly fighting about what show is better than another, like in the old days! I, for example, will not get tired of telling you that Olympic Stadium 2nd Night should NOT be on that list....

These are what I think are essentials for each tour. For some tours I listed less than 5 since I don't know what else should be considered "essential" for the respective tour.

I think that for the VFC and Human Rights tour at least, there's no reason to have five shows. Perhaps it's worth having more than five for some other tours.
I'm thinking now that maybe we set an upper limit of, say, 100 boots total and then figure out how to divvy them up among the tours, with at least a couple from every major period.

I agree. Can I also suggest that we adopt a 'standard' format for posting suggestions as it then makes it easier to compile the list eg :-

Here are some suggestions to add to the master list:

Instead of "Pre 1975" I think it should be pre Born to Run. So the 1975-02/05 - Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA should be here and not the Born to Run tour.

Born to Run:
This tour ran until May 1976 so 1976-04-04 East Lansing (Rise like the Rain (Ev2) belongs here and not the Chicken Scratch.
1975/11/24 - Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK Shit Hot and Rockin'

Darkness: I think we may need more than 5 shows for this tour. I suggest making this and the River tour ten shows.

My $.02-there should be sub-headings, i.e. sound quality, performance and historical value.

Some might fit all three-4 of the 1978 radio broadcasts come to mind. Subjective, yes; but then "essential" is subjective also. There are at least 5 boots mentioned that don't fit.

This is a veiled attempt by tD to get the lurkers out of the closet.

I hope Flynn's head isn't damaged too badly after banging it against the wall multiple times.

I suggest we put TD in charge and he set the rules on formatting, etc. otherwise, total chaos.

Just name your boots, and stop fussing with the formatting.

As for Count Basie, I have yet to hear a decent boot (are there more than two?) and given the newer and better boots of the most recent play throughs, although not played on some night, would put those in place of COunt Basie.

I am sure Flynn can "compile" two of those show portions into one, to replace Count Basie

I can see what you're saying. Ev2's version is listenable, and for historical value it's important. I think it should be included for that alone (even if the GS #4 and Philly #2 versions of the albums were better).

I just listened to 1981/05/07 'Warm Welcome in Stockholm' and 1981/05/08 'Teardrops on the City Revisited' head to head, and I really don't think WWiS sounds better. And since the second night was an even better show to begin with, my recommendation is to put that one on this list. One of the classic vinyl boots, and an absolutely mindblowing show.

I'd put that in Eugene's Essentials category because of the whole final Rising show/Dylan/concert length duration rather than being one of the defitive boots from the Tour. Night #2 is a vastly better show, IMO.

I would not consider that one a Top 5 show for the River tour as I prefer the 1980's setlists, but definitely a "must have", if we expand the list to 10 per tour, and it would certainly make the Top 100. Yes, I prefer the Hojo. The PS doesn't include the intro to Rosalita, which is a travesty. Between the Hojo and the CC it's a tossup, but the Hojo captures the atmosphere of the show better. I figure there will be lots of these sort of discussions about this list and I don't expect agreement, but that's part of the fun.

I certainly think the PS version is an upgrade over the relatively "flat" CC version. How is Hojo's compared to PS's, soundwise?

Agree generally. I was only referring to a post from TD that for some tours a Top 5 may not be enough to include all "must-haves" and the River tour may be one of them. I read that post from TD but I think we should stick to the basic. 5 shows each tour.

So for the great Darkness tour I think 5 is enough. The big 4 (Roxy, Agora, Passaic and Winterland) and my personal favorite to add is the final Palladium show for the setlist. Although the final Passaic setlist is even better it has not the same soundquality.

For the River tour you got the 3 soundboards from the 3 December shows ofcourse. Add the Vets show. But you can discuse if you need all 3 Nassau shows. And personaly I think the River shows arent that different when you look at the setlists. Add the mostly poor tapes. So do we still need more then 5 shows??

But let's not make this another Darkness vs. River-tour argument. Let's just agree that there's certainly a big difference from a fall 1980-show to a summer 1981-show.

That must have been a really long time ago, then...;) But I remember from one of your previous posts that you rate sound quality over performance/setlist, right? Then of course the three Nassau shows easily surpass this one. By the way, this is one example of a show where EVs version clearly is an upgrade to my ears

Of course, then there's the issue of a "special" show vs a show that is a good representation of that tour. The main example I'm thinking of is the 92-93 tour. On one hand, the 6/24/93 show was incredibly special with the near-ESB reunion, the horns, and Southside. On the other hand, it wasn't very typical of a show from that tour. Looking back, I'd prefer the Tacoma 92 show over this one or even the 8/7/92 show (New Jersey Friday Night), as it featured a lot of the material from the '92 albums.

Regarding placing a hard limit on either the total number of recordings or the number of recordings per tour, my thought is that if you need more for a tour, such as 78 or 80-81, but less for something like VFC or Amnesty, that's how it should be. There are certainly more than 5 shows that would be considered "essential" from the Darkness tour, but 5 would easily be overkill for the other two I mentioned.

And, certainly, just like I did a few years ago, once you have the essential shows/recordings, you can easily come up with a list of "Other Recommended" shows.

Of course, keep in mind that there will not be a single list that everyone is going to agree upon.

I think that's very true. It would simply not fit to have 5 from VFC or Amnesty and 5 from Darkness. Maybe we can refer to the number of shows per tour?

I'd put that in Eugene's Essentials category because of the whole final Rising show/Dylan/concert length duration rather than being one of the defitive boots from the Tour. Night #2 is a vastly better show, IMO.

100 shows? 5 each tour? 10 each tour? Christ...

Why not simply collect suggestions for everyone's favourite shows per tour and then see where it goes? If 5 shows are nominated repeatedly and everyone has a sixth or seventh show that noone else mentions, then there you are. And everyone interested can give a listen to that sixth or seventh recommendation and maybe add it to his personal favourites or not, that's what it should be all about, look here how it is supposed to work:

I don't give much of a **** whether in the end it will be a Top X or a Top X list, I want an overview of what are the best bootlegs including the Uber Series, the Anonymous recordings from the 70s, MarkP from the 80s etc. The interesting and fun part should be the recommendations and not the organizing of the final list.

I would propose the following:

a. Seperate threads for each tour (Pre BTR, BTR, Chicken Scratch, Darkness, River, BITUSA, TOL, HT/LT, GOTJ, Reunion, Rising, D&D, Seeger, Magic, WOAD) or at least per decade; what is "essential", i.e. 2 from Magic, none from HT/LT etc. can be decided afterwards or in the course of the discussion. It would be nonsense to limit a certain tour to 2 shows from the start even though in the end only 2 of that particular tour are considered "essential".

b. Separate thread for the rest (One-Offs, VFC, Christmas etc.) Nobody only half right in his mind would want a top 5 list for 7 VFC shows, right?

c. Read Flynn's above post and get started

EVs version is very good. The original Bakerstuff tape is already a nice one but EVs is the one you should look for. It is definitely not in the same league as San Jose or Gothenburg from that tour, but still very good,lot of atmosphere, the most often played show from the Magic tour in my house...

While considering which shows to include, I think it's important to represent different phases of the same tour. The two tours that come to mind in this respect are GoTJ and The Rising - early GoTJ shows (the 1st leg, Nov-Dec 95) were very very different from the final shows in Europe. Same for the Rising, where the show didn't change much early on (3 or 4 identical shows, IIRC), but by the summer of '03 it was a free-for-all.

Just a thought....

I've started to add individual threads for each tour - up to HT/LT for now, I'll add more in a week or so, don't want to be overwhelmed.

I'll also create two other threads "out of tour live performances" eg Amnesty, Christic, VFC, Bridge Benefit etc, and "non-live boots" such as Lost Masters, The Ties That Bind.

What do you think about one for "compilations" such as the Flynn boots, Nebraska Live and so-on?

Once we have our "candidates" of ten or so per tour, maybe the best thing would be to create a poll to get the list down to five.
