Last year’s Light of Day festival raised $500,000 for Parkinson’s disease resarch. This year’s festival, scheduled for Jan. 8-18 — mostly in Asbury Park but also in other New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania locations —  is just as ambitious. Tickets go on sale Saturday at noon via Ticketmaster.

Performers at the 16th annual edition of LOD will include Steve Forbert, Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers, Willie Nile and Band, James Maddock and Band, Jesse Malin and Band, Jill Hennessey, Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway, Milly, Marc Ribler & Friends, Joe D’Urso and Stone Caravan, Dramarama, the Billy Hector Band, the Beach Nuts, the Billy Walton Band, Bruce Tunkel and The Red House, Garland Jeffreys, Slim Chance and The Gamblers, The Sandy Mack Allstars, and Sonny Kenn.

As usual, Bruce Springsteen is not among the confirmed acts. But keep in mind that he has performed at the main Light of Day concert in 12 of the last 15 years. This year’s main concert takes place Jan. 16 at Asbury Park’s Paramount Theatre.

It’s new cities, new venues and one big Main Event.

Tickets for the 16th annual Light of Day Winterfest 2016, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 8 through Monday Jan. 18 at multiple venues in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Philadelphia  and New York City, go on sale at noon Saturday, Oct. 31 through Ticketmaster.com, charge-by-phone 800-745-3000, and select Ticketmaster outlets.

The highlight is the Light of Day Main Event, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Paramount Theatre, where the birthday of Light of Day founder Bob Benjamin is celebrated and supporter Bruce Springsteen often performs.

The Boss has played in 11 of the previous 15 Light of Day Main Events, all unannounced. The fest raises funds and awareness in the fight against Parkinson’s disease and related diseases and has generated more than $3 million overall since it began in 1998 in Red Bank as a birthday party for Benjamin, an artist manager who has Parkinson’s.

Confirmed artists for this year include Steve Forbert; Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers; the Beachnuts; Willie Nile; Jill Hennessy; James Maddock; Jesse Malin; Neil Berg’s 100 Years Of Broadway; Milly; Marc Ribler & Friends; Joe D’Urso and Stone Caravan; Dramarama; Billy Hector Band; Bruce Tunkel and the Red House; Garland Jeffreys; Slim Chance and The Gamblers; the Billy Walton Band; the Sandy Mack Allstars; Sonny Kenn and more to be added.

In all, it’s more than 150 artists in 50 venues across the region. New this year is a show at the Word Cafe Live in Philadelphia on Friday, Jan. 8; a comedy show at the Stress Factory in New Brunswick on Tuesday, Jan 12 and shows at the just-opened House of Independents venue in downtown Asbury Park, including a “Sweet Lil’ Sixteen Kickoff” on Thursday, Jan. 14, where acts will perform Chuck Berry songs.

“I may be doing ‘Sweet Little Sixteen,’ or oh ‘Carol,’“ said Tony Pallagrosi, the newly appointed executive director of the Light of Day and one of its founders. “It’s going to even more insane than last year. More of a blast.”

Ticket prices range from $325 for front orchestra seats for the Main Event, which includes access all other events, to $159.50 for Main Event rear orchestra and balcony seats, which also includes access to other events. Individual tickets will be available to the events and many shows are free, too

There will once again be a Light of Day Asbury Underground art gallery crawl on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Parkinson’s is a chronic and progressive neurological condition that affects movement and muscle control, according to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation website, www.pdf.org. Doctors are not sure of the cause, and for now, there is no cure for the estimated 1.5 to 2 million Americans who have Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s-related disorders that the Light of Day also brings awareness to include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, and progressive supranuclear palsy, known as PSP.

“It’s what music is supposed to do,” said Pallagrosi of the Light of Day.  “Music is supposed to bring people together, in my mind, and the Light of Day highlights the awesome power of music to raise money and awareness in order to defeat Parkinson’s and related neurological diseases in our lifetime.”

The Asbury Park Press is a Light of Day title sponsor. Visit www.lightofday.org for more information.
