So are the recordings from 1977 (i.e Milwaukee, Jacksonville and a few others) really recordings made by someone in the Springsteen camp or are these just really well made fan based recordings? I haven't seen these mentioned for a while. No soundboards ever found the light of day from '77, so the story has been that these are what recordings were made by a rather poor road crew who couldn't afford the blank soundboard tapes. Paging JEMS.

Are you retarded? Hell yeah it was better in '78!

JEMS here.

In the early '90s, somewhere between 1992-94, four new to circulation '77 audience tapes surfaced. Pretty sure Jacksonville was around before that, but Milwaukee was one of them, Richfield/Cleveland with Ronnie Spector and two others that are escaping me. At the time the story was these were, as you say, official audience tapes, done by the crew, from the board set-up area, but with open mics.

The sound on those four recordings certainly suggested the story could be true: little to no close audience sounds, no mic movement to speak of nor changing sound image, etc.

So no, I don't think they are fan recordings, especially given that they all surfaced at exactly the same moment. I can't say with certainty the story holds, but the physical evidence suggests it might be/could be true.

The last part of your post though, doesn't hold water. Cost has nothing to do with how you record. The recordings are the same, in that the board tapes we have from '76 and '78 were just two tracks to reel or cassette depending on the show, so it has nothing to do with the cost of blanks. What I recall being told is it was a choice at the time. Perhaps like the Dead, they were experimenting with the best way to document the shows (not to preserve for release) so at the time, someone thought audience tapes might be the way to go.

I first read about these recordings in the 1994 book "You Better Not Touch #2". Lynn Elder (aka Charles Cross in a dress) mentions Milwaukee (1977-02-22) and Baltimore (1977-02-13) as two of these recordings. To quote..."As the story goes, Bruce's sound crew recorded each night of the 1977 tour from microphones set up on the mixing desk and aiming at the PA".

I guess that it possible that Jacksonville is one of these recordings that somehow found the light of day earlier than the other recordings? Many of these tracks made it onto the original LP version of "All those Years" sometime in the early 1980's. The sound quality on this recording is simply stunning. It's hard to believe that some jamoke made this recording that sounds better to my ears (sorry Steve Hopkins) than any other audience recording from the 1970's.

The Toronto recording from 1977-02-13 isn't too far behind. I thought that this show was recorded by by JEMS or friends of that crew. If you listen closely, I swear that you an hear the guys heard yelling the requests from Saginaw 1978 in the background. Looking at the 1985 book "Blinded by the Light", the recording of this show was probably in circulation at that time.

From the recent upgrades from the JEMS team, it seems as if most if not almost all soundboard recordings that we have from the 1970's come via Ed Sciaky. I haven't seen these recordings associated with Ed. This there a known source of these recordings?

I have a disc with 8 tracks from Milwaukee and 2 tracks from Towson aka Baltimore titled:

Will The Real Bruce Springsteen Please stand Up, Real Live, RL CD 16

All of the tracks sound great.

Milwaukee and Baltimore are the other two, yes.

Interesting that you are so keen on Jacksonville. It has always been good but I don't think it holds a candle to any of Hopkins' Boston recordings from '77.

Detroit and Toronto '77 are both JEMS masters as you deduced and yes, the same guy yelling on Saginaw is yelling on Toronto. That's where he lived. He came down for the '78 Saginaw show from Canada.

Certainly a big chunk of our '70s boards came via Sciaky. But I don't believe the '77 shows were from him. As I wrote before, the tapes surfaced in the '90s. First person I knew who had them and told me the story was LA-based.

Finally, I can assure you that Charles Cross and Lynn Elder are not the same person, dress or no dress. They were not written by Mr. Cross.

If they were one and the same, he wouldn't have to change his name.  He could just hyphenate it...  Charles Cross-Dresser

Huh.  I missed the boat on this one.  Never heard of these leaked crew 77 shows.  Never paid much attention to Cleveland as I had a pretty bad copy of that show back in the 80s.  I had heard something about one tape from '78, Winterland 12/16, that it was supposedly recorded with mics by the crew (or it was overhead mics from the broadcast the previous night).  Sounded good, but not that good, so I didn't really believe that to be the case.  Then again, my copy was certainly far from the master.

This makes me wonder if one of the very well recorded shows in mid-July 78, (Houston or New Orleans ?), is a crew source as well since there was very little mic movement as you'd expect from a AUD back in the day, and fairly uniform crowd noise.  But there was a well known taper from NO IIRC that could have been the source. Any insight on those?

So is the EV2 Return to the Bombscare from this crew AUD?  Are these sources in circulation?

Thanks, as always!

We know who taped New Orleans, and it was a fan. Not sure about Houston.

I believe all four '77 "official audience tapes" are in circulation, but I don't think they've ever been torrented from known lineage sources.

At some point I'll check our copies and see if any warrant release. I believe ours to be third gen, but they are DATs of the gen in front of them.

Return to the Bombscare is from one of these tapes, but again don't know the source EV2 used or the generation.

I think Brucebase lists it as both Towson Univ. in Baltimore, which is geographically wrong but we all do go by Bruce base. lol

I thought the 4th show was Toronto but since we were speaking of JEMS releases, I may just be mixing it up.

Toronto was JEMS.   I also sent a note to Pete correcting him on Towson.  Worked near Baltimore for a few years, and Towson is decidely a suburb, and the university is in Towson.

Yep, I'm down that way a lot.

I'm sure that was inherited by Pete.

Yes, that's correct, I asked Erno about his sources last week and he did not use any of the above listed auds from the sbd for his edits.

I true Toronto transfer still needs to be done and someday will. But up next we return to The River.

:-) :-) :-)  I hope one that was mentioned in the last River posting of a show performed not very far from a river!!!

What?

JEMS' last posting of a River show was 18 Dec 80 IIRC, and they mentioned another show in the posting.  I don't want to steal their thunder, perhaps too late, but they mentioned a superb sounding recording from the following night. . . NYC, Hudson River. . .

just stumbled over this thread because i was trying to find the full "Towson" tape that has been mentioned here. as others have pointed out there is a boot called "Will The Real Bruce Springsteen Please Stand Up?" that features 8 songs from Milwaukee (1977-02-22) and 2 songs from Towson (1977-03-13) in great quality (they sound almost like soundboards imo with vocals that are very upfront and very little audience noise).

one of those 2 songs is Don't Look Back which might be the definite live version of this song (when it comes to his vocals, the sound quality and intensity it's the best imho). anyway here's my question has the full Towson concert ever surfaced? i know there are 2 versions uploaded by mjk5510 and Ivannf, both don't sound nearly as good unfortunately (and are probably from different sources).

thanks in advance for your help

Any chance someone can share these "official" audience recordings, if they are great quality? Don't have any 1977 shows in my collection.

As it says further back, all are in circulation with the exception of the Towson, aka Baltimore boot.  Only two tracks are known to circulate from that show.

thanks for clearing that up, that's what i thought. too bad because sound quality wise those 2 songs (from Towson) are as good as it gets for 1977 imho. if you wanna check them out yourself download the "Will The Real Bruce Springsteen Please Stand Up?" boot

Thanks, that's how I knew about them to begin with.  It's a  nice sounding boot.
