You know you don't need to ask my permission for anything!

I emailed you my rehearsal tickets stubs, but I guess you never got them, so here they are. Notice the excellent spelling of "rehersal". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Pissed it with rain most of the day in Manc.

Huge queues of traffic on the M60.

Either for United, Trafford Centre or the Seeger Sessions Band.

I wonder which?

Fingers crossed for Shenandoah.........

[]I sure as hell hope it's not How Can I Keep From Singing! [/]

Just got in. I can confirm it was indeed How Can I keep From Singing - A question I want an answer to. It wasn't helped by the godawful acoustics including some pretty nasty echo off the back of the arena for a couple of songs which they seemed to sort out. Stage rush during Dan Tucker which Bruce did seem to encourage. But it was a bloody good show, and if you're in two minds about whether it's for you, go. It's a completely different experience live. The boots don't do it justice.
So the final setlist should be:

1. John Henry
2. Oh Mary
3. Johnny 99
4. Old Dan Tucker
5. Eyes on the Prize
6. Jesse James
7. Cadillac Ranch w/ Lucille
8. Erie Canal

How Can I keep From Singing was introduced by Bruce saying something along the lines of "We've not done this before, let's improvise". Somebody will correct the wording I'm sure. It started with some wailing from Patti (and I like her). I thought it was an Irish folk song at first, maybe something he'd picked up in Dublin, but then Bruce sang the main bit and the penny dropped. If you're going to try a song like that you need to do it somewhere with better acoustics and not packed out with restless drunks shouting for Thunder Road.

Anyway, if you're going to any of the shows you're in for a treat. Have fun tomorrow in London.
HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING

My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation.
I hear the real, thought far off hymn
That hails the new creation
Above the tumult and the strife,
I hear the music ringing;
It sounds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing?

What through the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
What through the darkness round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm

While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of Heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble, sick with fear,
And hear their death-knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging.
When friends by shame are undefiled,
How can I keep from singing?

Just back
Great show except for How Can I Keep from Singing (sounded awful). City in Ruins a highliht for me.
Echo above comment about boring drunks shouting out - one even started trying to sing 'Born in the USA' while Bruce tried to introduce WSO.
We did get Open all Night and Saints so...

Just got back was a top show was nice to see bruce having a good time and not telling us to shut the fuck up and being morose (which he can be) highlight for me was how can a poor man and when the saints, these two were exceptional, cadillac ranch to me was unrecognisable, the actual bruce songs to me did not suit the arrangements, they were good fun, but in this format the seeger session songs and old folk songs worked best. Bruces songs were turned into swing band versions. Had a great time though, my son had his first bruce experience and loved it and he is ten. will look forward to the rock band bruce next year or the year after. If this tour comes back it wouyld be a great open air show, without the constraints of seats and being in an arena.

with regards to seating it looked to me as if they stretched the floor seats out a lot, there was a lot of empty space behind the floor seats and there was quite a lot of side seats, i reckon the seating format was enlarged a bit from what was supposed to small hall layout. they kept one block on the floor but started it quite a way from where that block would start if there was two more blocks in front of it. this allowed them to sel more side seats.

I reckon thjsi show will be excellent in hammersmith with the theatre set up.

going to bed now
cheers andy

We sing "How Can I Keep From Singing" in my Unitarian Universalist Church at least once a month. I know all the words, which is probably more than Bruce can say.

It's a nice church song, if you like church, which I'm mixed on. I will say, though, that at least my church doesn't expect me to believe anything, which is worth something.

It's been a long time comin' but now it's here
Yeah, now it's here

Just got back, and it won't surprise you to hear that I thought it sucked.

Let me just look at my notes that I typed on my mobile phone when I was bored shitless after an hour.....

- fun at first, but novelty wears off after 3 or 4 songs
- then you get bored
- then you get irritated
- how can they have so many musicians on stage and so little variety - every song is the same
- yikes, what the fuck is that wailing ginger bitch doing now?????
- can see why he doesn't do many of his own songs - these versions are shit
- the best bits are when he stops yelling and lets the solos take over
- best musicians are the Michael Stipe lookalike keyboard player and the drummer who looks like the little guy in the Benny Hill show
- i've basically paid ?110 for a couple of banjo solos

Oh, and a setlist correction. It was Cadillac Ranch (in some fashion) with the chorus lines from Mystery Train. I didn't hear any Lucille.

Touts took a beating as so many good seats had been released on the day. We managed to sell 5 spares for ?50 at 7.30 and I have no confidence that the tout would've been able to sell them on. Unless, of course, that's why people on Badlands trips only get their tickets right on showtime, but that's just a vicious rumour that I'm happy to start right here!
I finally made it back home (or to the office that is)

I did enjoy the show. Highlights for me were Open all Night and How can I keep from singing, but I liked many others two.

High points
- The song arrangements. Everything sounded much better than on the record. Not so improvised, much more practiced.
- Bruce's singing. Having backup singers who actually can sing well, made him sing better too.
- The general mood on stage - everyone seemed to have fun.
- the sound of the band. New and fresh and very ESB unlike - nice change.

Low points:
- the audience. The only response Bruce got came from the first few rows and a few selected people further back. It took them 4 songs (or 5) to finally rush the stage and the sing along was pathetic for most part. I found the reception of the show rather cold.
- the mixing was awful for the first few songs - Bruces voice sounded a bit "overdone" and the drums were too much front. Got much better later.
