I've listen to Seeds the other day and I understand that it's a song about unemployment and displacement of workers in the early 80's.

But I didn't get this line:

"The Elkhorn Special blowin’ my hair back"

I did a search on the internet but I couldn't find a proper answer.

So can some kind soul tell me who or what is the "Elkhorn special"?

I love this song....

And I have always taken that as the name of the train that is passing them as they are hunkered down by the railroad tracks.

as it passes it's blowing his hair back.

In small town America they often have names for the freight trains that are "regulars"  (same time of day passing the town)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey man, did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"

Very common back in the day the Trains would have names from the town folk.and the Train company themselves.

That's the only think I have ever thought about on that verse. guys hunkered down by the tracks going nowhere a Train passes by blowing their hair back with the breeze it's creating as it moves to it's destination.

Don't know if that's his intent...but it fits in my mind anyway

"Hey man, did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"
