Asbury Park Press USA TODAY NETWORK – NEW JERSEY

Where is the “Edge of Glory”?

It’s at the Shore. Lady Gaga had a Jersey reverie during her Thursday show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford that included tributes to Bruce Springsteen, the late Clarence Clemons and the state’s boardwalks.

It happened while she was performing a solo piano version of her hit “Edge of Glory.”

“As I’m in Jersey I got to give it up for my man Bruce Springsteen,” said Gaga, who then saluted Clemons. “Clarence played on this record, and Clarence passed on the same day the music video for this song came out when I was dancing on my New York street,” Gaga said. “Living my damn dream. All I wanted to do was shoot a music video with (blanking) Clarence Clemons.”

Clemons played his sax on the song, and in the video while Gaga danced on the street. He passed away June 18, 2011, at the age of 69.

Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta in New York City, has Jersey ties. Her father, Joe Germanotta, was born in Elizabeth, and she used to record in the Parsippany studio of producer Rob Fusari.

“Oh, there’s nothing like being on the boardwalk,” Gaga said. “Some of the best things in my life that ever happened to me happened (in New Jersey). Some of the worst things happened here, too. I’ll take them.”

Gaga was an unknown nearly 18 years ago when she took the bus from Manhattan to Parsippany.

“For everyone in here who has a dream, I promise you can made it happen,” Gaga, 36, said. “Just believe in yourself and love who you are and definitely, definitely don’t ever give up.”

Gaga gave a nod to Tony Bennett, and gave lawmakers and jurists a warning. “If this country comes for gay marriage, you know what’s going to happen,” Gaga said. “That was just a threat of love.” Thursday’s show was part of Gaga’s Chromatica Ball tour, and the Little Monsters, aka her fans, came out en masse. There were lots of boas, rainbow colors, glitter and long lines at the merch stands. There were also a few Harley Quinn shirts in the audience. Gaga will play the character opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming “Joker” sequel.

Gaga and her dancers and musicians performed on a stage that borrowed from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” and the Universal monster movies. Where are the monsters? Are they near, or are theywithin? An accompanying video between songs suggest that they are internal. “Have you ever had to battle for your life?” Gaga asked.

Gaga previously revealed that she suffers chronic pain from fibromyalgia related to a sexual assault she suffered when she was 19. It caused her to cancel part of her 2018 Joanne tour. The Chromatica Ball tour was postponed twice because of COVID. On Thursday, Gaga and 55,000 fans danced through the pain with two hours of upbeat art pop, piano ballads and costume changes.

In the Chromatica world, monsters and dreams live side by side.
