It's more of an insurance policy this year for both closer Papelbon, who has only pitched 6+ innings this month and has been babied all season, and for setup man Timlin, who's as old as you. It also will give Okajima some rest, too. Also, if they can sign him to an extension, it really frees up Papelbon to be put in the rotation for next year. Gabbard is nothing.

Gagne is a Boras boy.
There'll be no extention...he goes on the market in the off-season.

That said, it works out for all the above parties.
Gagne is now playoff bound and high profile. Boras gets rich on another deal. The Sox get a closer playing setup.

Fuck the Braves...this is the deal of the trade deadline.
Just when they think they have all the answers, I come and change all the questions.

Huh? Why?

For suggesting that the Gagne trade is a good trade?
For suggesting that the Yankees have a crap farm system?
Or for dashing your hopes with my subject header?

1. Because you don't realize the Braves are the big winners so far at the trade deadline

The Braves did well, no doubt.
But the Braves are still facing an uphill battle. They got a solid bat and good fielding in Texiera, even if he has to adjust to a pitcher's park now. Dotel in the pen is a nice addition as well.
But with my team having 3 of the top eight ERA for starting pitching and the 3rd lowest ERA bullpen in the league, I'll just enjoy the race....and may the better team win.

I still think the Gagne move is more of a high impact move because it makes the Sox practically untouchable.
The Sox are a lock now....the jury is still out on the Braves.

That goes without saying.

Considering the average age for the Yankee's starters is about 90, they pretty much need to keep anyone whose arm is still attached to his shoulder, regardless of ability. Then again, the Yanks will always have ARod's 500th to look back fondly on for the season.

As far as the Braves, Tex is an OK pickup for them. Let's see how handles playing in that park though. Texas did OK for themselves, too. Dotel is not much to write home about.

I couldn't. He is one of the first players who come to mind when thinking of the labor talks that almost killed baseball in the 90's (before steroids finally finished them off). I don't like the guy.

It ain't no sin to be glad you're alive.

Yeah, how dare those greedy ballplayers want a piece of the gazillions that owners are making off their names.

I never said I liked the owners, either.

I personally was a little pissed at him for not wearing a tie when the union reps went to the White House during the strike. I hope he never gets to 300.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

It's looking like 1978 again, for real.

Please, the 1978 collapse took place because the Sox played sub-500 ball and the Yankees played close to .800 ball in 2 out 3 of the last months of the season, I won't even bring up the Massacre. This year, the Yankees have been whittling away at the lead since ARod hooked up with that she-male stripper and have been playing .700 ball against primarily the weakest teams in the league and the Sox have been just playing above .500. As I've said before, I'm just amazed it has taken the Yankees this long to get even close with the way they've played. Settle down, the Red Sox will be Lucy to the Yankees Charlie Brown.

Very tough loss last night but it certainly wouldn't have been a lock pre-trade either. That spot, in that situation in the 8th would've probably have gone to Timlin and he has been anything but a lock. Gagne will be fine once he loses a bit of that closer mentality and gets accustomed to coming into non-save games. Tito sucks.

Frankly, I could care less about the ALEast title. How's that worked out for the Yankees the past 6 years?
