I use these from Koss: http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^eb^PLUG (eliminates any noise from around you, you only hear the ipod music).
I received a set with my Dell that I use with my iPod and they are my favorites. I absolutely hate the ones that came with the iPod. My kids have some gummy ones, but I don't like those much. I want to buy another set but I don't want to risk anthing more than $20 on something I may hate....
Apple (today) was granted a patent for a "new iPod/iPhone" ear bud. There is word that their availablity will announced at the Mac Expo held in September. From what the published specs are saying, they is gonna be gooood. They were also granted 5 other patents for other cool toys. Last year, it was the specs for the iPhone 3G that was announced later at Mac Expo. No word on price or anything of coarse.
I would wait. If it means that much to you. Otherwise, use full-over-ear headphones (sound improves incredibly that way, couple that with some playing around with the EQ and you are set). I wouldn't recommend it for activities (running, workouts, etc) as that doesn't work so good. But seeing as "physical exercise" is something of a puzzle to you yet, I don't think that would be an issue heh heh heh....
[edit] Oh yeah, as Erno said, make sure you get "Noise Cancelling" headphones. Makes one hell of a difference. It is something that Apple should have included from the start (HAH!)
Do people really spend $400 on iPod earbuds? I would go as high as $100 (prefer to stay under $50) but it just seems like they better be fabulous for that kind of money.
