I have always thought it was skull (rhymes with dull) and been pretty outspoken about how wrong soul is. BUT, look at the lyrics in my cassette copy of BUSA:

It's also "soul" in the "Songs" book, written by Bruce himself.

But in the Live 75-85 lyrics, soul has been changed to skull and it's very clearly skull in the recording:

So...what is going on here?!

Bill Horton was a cautious man of the road.

I think every live version has 'skull' - have not heard 'soul'. The album version sounds like 'skull' to me TBH.

This brings up the whole debate about some lines in "Human Touch" that have the same discrepancies.

I don't have the link however... most of his lyrics have been copyrighted with The Library of Congress which is where the original lyrics would be.  But... no matter what the original lyrics say, it doesn't mean he couldn't have changed it live since then.

Brucebase and SpringsteenLyrics list it as soul.  I just listened to the latest Detroit Archive release and he definitely sings skull.  I'm going to go way back and see what he sang.

I listened to the first three dates in Memphis, 1984.  All three sound like soul.

In 1985, to my ears it sounds like skull.

Gonna listen to the albums now. lol

If he did a box set for the anniversary, we may have had the hand written lyrics to at least see what his original version was.

01000111 01101111 00100000 01000011 01100001 01110000 01110011

No telling when that would happen. I suspect it would be a Nebraska - Born In The USA boxset because of how they were cut together and tried out. That is a different story though.

Whatever the lyric sheet says doesn't matter.  I listened to all my albums and a bunch of boots, compared shows before and after 1985.  In 84 it sounds like he's singing soul. I've heard skull from 85 on...  That being said if you think in your mind he's singing soul... it sounds like soul.   If you think he's singing skull... it sounds like skull.  To me skull makes more sense cuz after his skull is cut with that knife, he's got a big ole headache with that freight train running through his head.

The lyric sheet from my copy of the LP from 1984 says "middle of my soul".

Desa, I think that's how he wrote it.  When he heard skull and figured it fit better or sounded better.  He started singing it that way.  I prefer skull but either one works for me.
