One Christmas early in my relationship with Beth we got hit with a Christmas snow storm  along the East Coast. I was supposed to drive to Maryland from North Jersey the next day. It started snowing about 6:00 pm.  I was afraid if I waited till morning I'd be snowed in and wouldn't be able to go.  So I left around 8:00 pm.  It took a little over 7:00 hours, what is usually a four hour drive. About 5 minutes before I got there, Drive All Night comes on the radio.  I pull into the driveway and open the garage. Beth comes running out.  I motion to her to get in the car and we listened to the rest of of this great tune together.  I'd call that a Bruce Karma moment.

Clarence's play is more upfront and just that much more soulful.  The mournful, desperate wails of Bruce in the middle appear so much more emotional. In Tempe Bruce's whispering to her, he's pleading with her.

It tugs at your heart.

I buy everything you wrote, both are very good versions. I like the Gothenburg version more, because it is musically a little more homogeneous. The singing and the sax solos are technically better from my point of view. In the second part of the song there are these meditative parts where he builds up the energy several times with very few repeated lines with so much emotion and power, whaow! I could listen to that again and again.

But in the end I'm not an objective observer anyway: I was standing second row center on that night (and the next as well)...

That can tend to sway an opinion.  I wish I could say that was why i love the Tempe version.  Alas, I cannot.
