Hi all,
I have my Bruce collection ripped to iTunes.
The files are tagged and all, but for some reasons I haven't set anything but the Year tag, as far as recording date goes.
I'm now tempted to add a more detailed recording date, and the obvious choice shall be to use the 'Sort Album' field in this format:

YYYYMMDD

that will be 20120607 for i.e. a show recorded on June 7, 2012.

Anyway this won't fit very well for compilations (expecially the ones spanning several years, such as 'All Those Years' or 'Deep Down in the Vault').

I was also thinking like keepeing separated live rec from studio/outtakes and official releases.

Any suggestions? Ideas?

Thanks

So this what I came up with. I used the sorting tags (as far as I know they are used just by iTunes, i.e. foobar2000 ignore them by default).

I set 'Sort Artist' and 'Sort Album Artist' both to 'Bruce Springsteen'.

The 'Sort Album' tag is set with the following convention:

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN OFFICIAL RECORDINGS <year>
for officially released stuff

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN STUDIO OUTTAKES
for studio outtakes compilations (such as 'Deep Down In The Vault', 'American Madness' etc etc)

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN UNOFFICIAL COMPILATIONS
for live compilations (such as 'All Those Years')

for all other unofficial live recordings I set the tag with the recording date, venue, city, country as in brucebase wikis so, for instance for the Milano show:
2012-06-07 - SAN SIRO, MILAN, ITALY

Final result is that in iTunes, Album view, all official releases are displayed first, then studio outtakes, then all sort of unofficial compilations, and finally all the live recordings sorted out chronologically.

Another 'cool' feature is that putting a city name, or venue, in the 'Search Music' field will filter out and display all bootlegs recorded in that specific place.

It took ages (436 albums tagged)!!!
But I like it.

Cheers
