Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ 4CD/3DVD Box Set Out December 4th

Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ on December 4th.  A comprehensive look at ‘The River’ era, the set contains 52 tracks on 4 CDs with a wealth of unreleased material, and 4 hours of never-before-seen video on 3 DVDs. It is comprised of the original ‘The River’ double album; the first official release of 'The River: Single Album;' a CD of 1979/80 studio outtakes; a two-DVD film of never-released, newly edited multi-camera footage from Springsteen’s famed 1980 show in Tempe, AZ, long rumored but never-before-seen; rare tour rehearsal footage; a brand new documentary “The Ties That Bind" about 'The River;' and a coffee table book of 200 rare or previously unseen photos and memorabilia with a new essay by Mikal Gilmore.

‘The River,’ Springsteen’s fifth album, was released on October 17, 1980 as a double album and reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. In his notes, Gilmore calls ‘The River’ Springsteen’s “pivotal album—[the] hinge between the ambitious commotions that had preceded it and the more succinct musical riots, and sometimes terrifying storytelling, that followed.” (Two CDs, recently re-mastered).

‘The River: Single Album’ is the 10-track album that Springsteen recorded in 1979 as a follow up to 1978’s ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’ but never released. “The songs lacked the kind of unity and conceptual intensity I liked my music to have. So we went back in the studio,” he wrote in the lyrics/photo book “Songs.” The early sessions marked the beginning of a prolific 18-month long journey of writing and recording. Seven of the 10 titles on ‘The River: Single Album’ eventually appeared on ‘The River,’ some with alternate lyrics and arrangements, with outtakes like “Cindy" and a rockabilly version of "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)" never released. Now for the first time ‘The River: Single Album’ will be officially available.

The fourth CD on the box set is ‘The River: Outtakes,’ which spans the entire ‘The River’ sessions in 1979 and 1980 and illustrate the depth and variety of Springsteen’s work during this period. Eleven songs are rarities that have never been released before, and for the most part are completely unheard and unknown even to fans, who have long considered Springsteen’s outtakes to be treasured secrets. The eleven unheard outtakes ('Record One') were mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Bob Ludwig. Eleven additional outtakes ('Record Two') are collected from the ’Tracks’ box and ‘Essentials' so as to put them in one place.

"The Ties That Bind” is a brand new 60-minute documentary produced and directed by Zimny that features an intimate interview with Springsteen as he reflects on the tumultuous, extended period writing and recording ‘The River.' The film transitions between Springsteen telling the stories behind the music — and illustrating them with solo acoustic guitar performances -- interspersed with period concert footage and rare photos of Bruce and the band in and out of the studio.

The final video component is "Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour, Tempe 1980," a new film produced from footage professionally filmed in 1980 using four cameras and recorded in multitrack audio. The film features 24 songs — 2 hours, 40 minutes — on 2 DVDs from Springsteen’s November 5, 1980 concert at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.

Widely regarded as one of Springsteen’s finest performances, this intense show features early live versions of over half of 'The River' songs. Also included is 20 minutes of footage from the late September, 1980 River Tour rehearsals held in Lititz, PA, showing Springsteen and The E Street Band working through live arrangements of what was then unreleased material from the upcoming album.  The film was recently edited by frequent Springsteen collaborator and Grammy and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny, and the audio was mixed in Stereo & 5.1 surround by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack recordings and mastered by Bob Ludwig.

‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ is packaged in a 10” x 12” box with a hardcover 148-page coffee table book containing 200 studio and live photographs — most of which have never been seen before — plus pages from Springsteen’s notebooks, single covers, images and outtakes from the original album package, and other memorabilia documenting the album. Liner notes include a new essay from journalist Mikal Gilmore, the original Rolling Stone album review from 1980, and Springsteen’s updated comments about the album from the 1998 “Songs” book.

‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ is available for pre-order at Amazon (4CD/3DVDs or 4CD/2Blu-ray)

Some initial impressions (and gripes):

It is rather obvious that "Meet Me In The City" has a modern vocal take from Bruce. I hope this is NOT the case for most of the previously unreleased songs on "The River" outtakes disc. Several of the "Darkness" outtakes on "The Promise" 2-CD set had newly recorded vocals when they already had solid 1977/78 vocal takes in place. It was a needless exercise, and my only disappointment with that project.

The original title of "Meet Me In The City" was "In The City Tonight." According to the Sony studio logs....

http://brucebase.wikispaces.co...er+-+Studio+Sessions

...."In The City Tonight" was never professionally recorded at the Power Station from 1979-1980. It was only rehearsed at Bruce's house. I have suspicions that this track is like "Save My Love" from "The Promise"....a song that was written, rehearsed but never actually recorded for the album it was intended for. "Meet Me In The City" could very well be a track that was recorded from the ground up recently.

I have my suspicions that "Mr. Outside" is also a new recording. It was never recorded professionally at The Power Station. It was only demoed. Parts of it went into the song "Whitetown" that has been included on the box set.

I like the inclusion of the original "Ties That Bind" album (songs have different mixes and such), but it is kind of redundant to include outtakes that were already released - in digitally remastered sound quality - on "Tracks." The people who will be buying this monster "River" box set already have "Tracks." According the Sony studio logs....

http://brucebase.wikispaces.co...er+-+Studio+Sessions

...there are still several outtakes that were professionally recorded at The Power Station that could've been included in this box set. Titles include:

"Under The Gun" (considered for "Tracks')

"Do You Want Me To Say Alright" (considered for "Tracks")

"Jole Blon" (a cover tune)

"A Thousand Tears (William Davis)"

"I Will Be The One"

There were also several songs that band recorded that were later given to Gary US Bonds such as "Angelyne" (considered for "Tracks") that were bypassed for this latest box set.

I would much rather get these unreleased tracks than get "Mary Lou" and other "Tracks" songs that have already been officially released in outstanding sound quality.

I also find it curious why "Bring On The Night" wasn't included in "The River" box set since they included all the other outtakes that were included on "Tracks."

Everything else about the box set I love, but I just hate the fact that I will never hear songs like "Under The Gun" that were good enough to be considered for official release at one time.

If Hammersmith and Houston have anything on Tempe, it's that they're complete documents. While the film runs well over two-and-a-half hours, and 24 songs doesn't feel skimpy, this is not the full show as performed in Arizona that night. Asked the reason why, Zimny gives a reason that's hard to argue with: more footage simply doesn't exist.

"All the footage that was available from Tempe was used," Zimny tells us. "No one, for instance, cut 'Racing in the Street' because they didn't like it — there was no editing in that sense. We used every frame of what we had available, down to the DVD menus."

As Zimny explains, the intent behind getting a film crew to Arizona 35 years ago was never for a concert film, but more likely for publicity purposes. "There were no DVDs, no streaming, no real live concert market at that point. There were no plans for this in the '80s to be released as a concert." He likens it to the   Phoenix '78 filming that resulted in the "Rosalita" music video: "It was used for commericals. It was just cut up."

Illustrating his point, here's how they made use of the Tempe footage six years after filming (look for the sportcoat and sideburns):

"Really, we got lucky that this was documented at all," Zimny says, "to have this much, since there was never a plan for this to be representative of a full show."

Viewed in that light, we have to wonder, then, why so much was captured, and so well. Zimny laughs and mentions George Travis, Springsteen's longtime Tour Director, who was also on the scene at the time and whom Thom spotted in the Tempe footage. "Until that minute, I wondered that myself: why was it so well-covered when there was no demand for it at the time? This four-camera beauty, all the cameras being in the right places.... I didn't know why it wound up being so great. And then I saw that George was there, and I knew."

Son we're lucky in this town, it's a beautiful place to be born...

I'm very happy about the announcement of this box, even if 3 1/2 CDs are worthless, because we already have them.

It's a pitty, that we don't get the complete Tempe concert on DVD (because according to Thom Zimny there is no more video footage), but I'm exited anyway. However, WHY CAN'T THEY GIVE US THE COMPLETE AUDIO OF THE TEMPE CONCERT??? I can't believe that this does not exist.

"Do You Want Me To Say Alright" is basically "Meet Me In The City."

I'm wondering what happened to "Slow Fade?"

Maybe we will hear those on Tracks II, which is sure to be on the horizon.

It's Christmas time so they put this big ticket number out at the right time. I wonder what the pre-sale projections will be.  How many of these bad boys do you think he will sell?  I just can't see the casual fan buying this, can you?  Do you think there are enough casual fans to make this a win for Sony and Bruce Inc?

Inquiring minds want to know?

One other question: I assume Bruce, Inc. have a different version of the master tape of The Ties That Bind album. How will they remix it? "Loose Ends" on Tracks is a different mix from the JEMS version. (Personally, I prefer the JEMS).

And thanks Wizardus for providing the Tempe clarification.

"I've done my best to live the right way"

Regarding the song "Slow Fade"....

http://brucebase.wikispaces.co...er+-+Studio+Sessions

Note: V1 thru V6 are rehearsal workouts at Telegraph Hill on February 5, 1980. The studio logs indicate this song was never recorded at The Power Station as "Slow Fade", but it could be the uncirculated "I Will Be The One", which was recorded in the studio just eleven days after these rehearsals. Great song, unfortunately the lyrics are utterly buried under the music. The solo demo of "Slow Fade" recorded in late 1979 and found on The Lost Masters Essential Collection Vol. 1 is not related to this song, rather it is an early version of "Fade Away". This iteration of "Slow Fade" is not related to "Fade Away" in any respect.

Thanks Gunner! So this track is "I will Be The One."

It's now official.  1977-1981, the best five years of his career will never yield a complete video dubbed with a multi track recording.
The dream ended today.

I thought the same thing reading Wizardus' post on Tempe. So I checked Brucebase and it said "all three nights in Passaic were recorded by the Record Plant's mobile unit, both on multi-track and live-to-two track)."

So, yes, it's black and white. But if Bruce wants it to come out, he can release it, especially since he has the master tape of the third night. I'd be happy with black-and-white from the master. And then there's Winterland . . .

This box set looks really promising.

I understand the approach that Bruce sees this project as one piece. So it's good that there won't be an "Essential" or "Best of" kind of thing.

But since I'm mainly interested in the audio/video part I've hoped for an edition without the book.

The main reason is the Darkness box where I've only flipped two or three times through the scrap book and now it sits on the shelf.

So a additional release at the size of maybe the BTR box with all of the discs (in jewel cases) and a stripped down booklet would be great.
