What Is Your Conception Of God???
If any?

How do you imagine God? If you don't believe in God, then how would you describe the essence of reality?

CHERRY TOP

Last time I saw him was NYC October 2003. He looked pretty good, and seemed happy with himself, but was a bit unsure about the world. Seemed to be ok to me, pretty decent bloke.

to properly answer this (with proper justification), one would need to write a thesis. also, what prompted this? i assume the bombings in Madrid?

another retreat is my guess.

Now we are getting somewhere! Okay, question....if absolute truth exists, how do you explain the existence of the world around us, which seems quite relative? Is birth and death real?

(1) i assume this is your point/question: 'the world exists insofar as our senses tell us it exists. how do we know it exists outside of our senses?'
We must first accept that something can exist other than that which we directly experience with our 5 senses. If we do not accept this, how can we assume that we have senses at all? Our understanding of senses is that they are the product of neurons firing in the brain. But if we cannot grant that anything exists outside of our own brains, we cannot grant even that brains exist or that neurons exist.
so, unless you consider yourself the sum of existence (if nothing else exists except in your own thoughts, at least your own thoughts exists. hence "I think therefore I am".), we at least can agree that there exists something else in the "world" other than ourselves.

once you accept this, you can begin to consider if these "other things" have any absolute qualities...

(i am writing this at work, so by necessity it will be broken up)

Killer!

Now, can "absolute truth" be described ACCURATLY with the 5 senses if truth exists outside of them? Or can it be just vaguely described?

sergerca KOM, thanks. Exactly what I needed. I'm bored at work, and I was hoping for a good thread that could kill the next 3 hours.

I'll keep it short. Physically (if that's possible) I think God looks like anything you want. Heaven is the same way to me. A lot like "What Dreams May Come". Paint your own heaven.

To me, God is the streotypical, white bearded man, sitting on a throne. The good, wise old king. But very approachable and down to earth (if that's possible). I've always thought of God that way. Even though my spirituality has deepened, my image hasn't changed from my childhood view.
