Always looking for the best Roy on Racing!!!

Will check your recommendation today. Which Foxboro are you referring to?

I actually started a thread about this in 2010...
https://www.spl-messages.net/t...in-the-streetandquot

Most of the versions mentioned there fell in the "Twang" era. I think he dropped that a little in 2016, and went back to his former singing style.  Curious to hear your opinion on that.

On a sidenote:

I saw seven E Street Band shows in my life (all between 2009 and 2016). Was lucky to catch "Point Blank" 3 times (2009, 2013 and obviously 2016), but never lucky enough to hear "Racing" live YET.

May it be part of a static set list on the next tour, if there ever is one.

Thanks will check it out.

Was lucky to see it live in Adelaide in 2017. It was an amazing performance and blew me away. I love the song but it really surprised me live. One of my all time highlights at a show.

Cheers,

Hazy

Pretty may not be a word I usually use to describe Bruce's music, however...

IMHO this is the prettiest song he's ever performed, live or in studio.  It moves me live, I see magnificent colors and imagery.  It comes to life for me.

Let me tell you a little story cuz Racing will come to life for me even more so now.

When I was in college, one of my good friends and fraternity brother's had a beautiful Silver 442.  He'd go down to Newark to some back end streets and they'd have these illegal drag strips set up and races going on.  Big Joe would partake in one or two.  I always think of him when I hear this song.  Joe always had a twinkle in his eye. He reminded me of Santa when I looked at him in a certain light all because of that darn twinkle.  Joe was a big good looking Italian, dark wavy hair, a mustache, the ladies loved him. Joe oozed cool.

A few weeks after a race we had a party at our fraternity house.  Joe met his future wife at the party.  By springtime he sold the 442 and bought a Toyota.  They got engaged, got married and moved to Florida to be near her family and have one of their own.

I'd see them every few years when we went down there and on those years we didn't go we'd talk on the phone twice a year and catch up usually summer and Christmas.

A few weeks back I got a phone call from his beautiful wife, Isabel.  Her husband and my good friend, Joe, passed away.  He suffered a heart attack.

So now I will think of Joe just a wee bit more every time this beautiful song is played.

Tara's post got me to take advantage of the Nugs sale and download the second Philly show (I only had the first one, which I still think is the best show of the tour). It may not be the best Racing ever (I still prefer the Darkness versions that go into "Thunder Road" complete with the story/bridge) but this is definitely my favorite recent version.

My weekend ride:

More of a "Riding In The Street" car than a "Racing In The Street" car.  I couldn't resist stopping at the 7-Eleven the other day and taking this shot while thinking to myself:

I Got A 66 Fury

With a 318

Standard Heads, And Some Rugs On The Floor....

Racing still remains my favorite Bruce song -- with the live 1978 versions as my absolute favorites -- but with great affection for the 2016 ones as well.

One of my favorites since I fell into Bruce. A true masterpiece of music. Is it Roy? Is it Danny? Or Gary? His haunting voice or incredible lyrics on this one? I don’t know, just love this one. And it gets me every time, especially the last verse where you can really feel the pain.

-But now there's wrinkles around my baby's eyes
And she cries herself to sleep at night
When I come home the house is dark
She sighs, "baby did you make it all right"
She sits on the porch of her daddy's house
But all her pretty dreams are torn
She stares off alone into the night
With the eyes of one who hates for just being born-

never been able to pass this part without at least some wet eyes.

Glad to witness this masterpiece 3times live, including one incredible solo performance during the Devils and Dust tour. Wasn’t better than full band live just incredible intense and different.

btw. Don’t forget the Big Man on the outro!

just didn’t like the ‘78 harmonica at the beginning of the outro on the tour. Sounds kinda wrong to my ears.

Yeah man, absolutely...in my mind the last verse is up there amongst his best work. It’s killer. One of my all time favourites, incredible! Always elicits emotion. Every time.
