Bruce Springsteen convinced his friend Bette Midler to sign up as a mentor for U.S. TV talent show The Voice.

AARP's 15th Annual Movies For Grownups Awards

The veteran was unveiled as country star Blake Shelton's advisor for the upcoming 11th season of the hit show on Thursday (28Jul16), and she admits she wasn't sure she was the right person to help coach hopefuls when she first got the call.

"I was a little bit freaked out... because I thought, 'What the hell am I gonna tell these kids?'" Bette tells news show Extra. "I'd seen other coaches and their riffing and running and I'm like, 'I can't do that'."

She turned to The Boss for his opinion and Bruce told her she'd be foolish to turn the job down.

"He said, 'You do have it in you to tell them what to do'."

Blake was thrilled when the entertainer said yes, because he's been dying to meet her for years: "I actually use my position here on The Voice to meet people who I want to meet," he jokes.

And Bette is glad she signed up - because now she gets to flirt with Blake, and get paid for it!

"I thought, 'He's really cute, he's really funny, he has a tremendous amount of personal charm, and I would like to be in his orbit, so why not... and he's a tremendous coach."

And turning to her new TV sidekick, she adds, "Now I'm in your presence and I see how you're so encouraging and you're very warm... the people who come through here feel like you're rooting for them, and I feel that's really important."
