I'm guessing this happened on the sand near the ocean as you're allowed to drive on the beach this time of year.  Perhaps he was going to fast on the beach?

"Both the Gateway Sandy Hook, a National Recreational Area run by the National Park Service, and Island Beach State Park offer year-round driving options in New Jersey, as does the city of Brigantine Beach. The Gateway Sandy Hook area allows visitors to drive on the beach to park between Memorial Day and Labor Day for a daily fee, or a seasonal beach pass is available for purchase, notes the National Park Service.

Beach driving and parking is free the remainder of the year. Island Beach State Park allows those owning a four-wheeled vehicle, who wish to surf fish access to its beaches year-round, as long as a permit is obtained first. Drivers may select a three-day permit or a year-round permit, valid from January 1 to December 31. Brigantine Beach offers a year-round permit for purchase to owners of four-wheel drive vehicles."

Bruce is getting roasted over the coals on some of the other boards but I feel for him.

Is this really world news? Even here in Europe in every newspaper.
I get it, he’s famous but come on.
Drinking and driving is not okay but it happens in every country, in every city and in every town.
Let’s forget about this and focus on his music.

It's certainly overblown world wide but it is news and this is a Springsteen board.  What I find funny is that Jeep pulled that ridiculous ad because of it.  I guess Bruce didn't tell them about it.

Jeep Removes Bruce Springsteen Ad From YouTube After Arrest News

Following the news that Bruce Springsteen was arrested in New Jersey on suspicion of drunken driving last November, Jeep has taken down his Super Bowl ad from their YouTube page. In the spot, titled “The Middle,” Springsteen called for national unity and hope amid the partisan strife and pain caused by the pandemic.

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment on the details of a matter we have only read about and we cannot substantiate,” Jeep said in a statement to Variety. “But it’s also right that we pause our Big Game commercial until the actual facts can be established. Its message of community and unity is as relevant as ever. As is the message that drinking and driving can never be condoned.”

News of Springsteen’s arrest surfaced on Wednesday in a report on TMZ. Charges from the Nov. 14 arrest at Gateway National Recreation Area included driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area, according to a statement from the National Park Service. Springsteen was described as “cooperative throughout the process.”

Springsteen lives on a large farm near the area, also known as Sandy Hook.

Representatives for Springsteen had no immediate comment on the matter. It was not immediately clear why word of Springsteen’s arrest only became public today.

The New York Daily News reported that no court date has been set for Springsteen’s appearance in what the newspaper described as New Jersey’s “enclave court,” or the federal version of traffic court.

Springsteen most recently released his 20th studio album, “Letter to You,” with the E Street Band on Oct. 23. The release of the album was accompanied by a documentary, titled “Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You,” directed by Thom Zimny.

Mister state trooper.........

......just the cruel irony for his first commercial endorsement for a car followed by news of the DUI.

Bruce supposedly blew an .02 on the breathalyzer.  If true, he won't be convicted.

Perhaps he did badly on the psycho/physical tests due to the sand and his bad back. It will be dismissed.

It sounds to me like the cop was young.  Bruce may have had trouble with a balance test or two and was arrested.  It also sounds like there was no other experienced officer there to advise the officer that de didn't have to charge him and could issue a summons for the stop and articulate in writing the basis for the arrest eg: lost balance on a one leg stand, after all Bruce does have a bad back which I can identify with.  An experienced officer asks those question before testing.  eg: are you on any medication?  Do you have any injuries?  Did you graduate high school?  Do you have any speech or cognitive difficulties. etc.

I hope all those sanctimonious peeps on the other boards choke on their words.  I really do.

If he was on other meds that impacted his driving, he still could be under the influence and it would be a just arrest.

That being said, sounds like they are going to have an uphill slog if they want to convict.  Charges have to be dropped.

@Oats, not on the other boards but it's funny that the SPL (which used to be the cynical one) is now the forgiving one.

Could be a few reasons:

1) We're older and wiser with age... more shades Grey than Black and White

2) We're older and more mellow...

3)  That's where the damned went... oh... oh... I meant the banned.

4) We're more spiritual.

5) A combination of all of the above.

I think it's because we know Bruce is a rock and roll singer/songwriter/performer, who happens to really great, maybe the best ever at what he does, but otherwise he's still a human being with all the inherent flaws. We've always known that here so getting busted is not that big a deal. He's a rock and roller after all. The only pedestal people put him on here was as a singer/songwriter/performer.

Frankly, I think this came out in the mass media this week and not two months ago because he did the Super Bowl ad and the right wing media is doing their typical tactic of shoot the messenger to discredit the message.

"I've done my best to live the right way"

Oats your experience with this is instructive. And per this Ledger story, usually summonses there don't become public. Someone leaked it. Then Bruce's camp, "a music industry source" leaked his alcohol reading.  And I continue to say, he got back on the bike, started the engine-and that justified a reckless driving summons? Huh? He started it recklessly?

"Bruce Springsteen was “visibly swaying back and forth,” had glassy eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol after consuming a shot of Patron Tequila, according to a federal violation notice filed on Thursday.

The sparse, six-page notice and statements of probable cause that was docketed in U.S. District Court in New Jersey offered new details in the months-old arrest, which was only confirmed on Wednesday by the National Park Service.

In the filing, a Park Service officer who issued the violations last November said he saw Springsteen take the drink a little after 4 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, get on his Triumph motorcycle and then start the engine, before he was approached.

“I contacted Springsteen and informed him alcohol is prohibited at Sandy Hook,” officer R.L. Hayes, wrote in a statement of probable cause. “The Patron bottle that the shot was poured out of was completely empty.”

Springsteen told the officer he had “two shots of tequila in the last 20 minutes.”

The New York Post published a report based on a music industry source that Springsteen was ticketed after taking a shot with fans while he sat on his motorcycle at Sandy Hook. and the Asbury Park Press reported, based on a source, that his blood alcohol was well below the legal limit.

Hayes said the musician was put through a series of field sobriety tests, and claimed that he smelled strongly of alcohol and had glassy eyes.

“Springsteen was visibly swaying back and forth while I observed his eyes,” said Hayes. “Springsteen took 45 total steps during the walk and turn instead of the instructed 18.”

He added that Springsteen also refused to provide a sample on the preliminary breath test.

The 71-year-old rock legend and Freehold native had been charged last fall of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and drinking in an area where alcohol is prohibited. But the matter never came to the attention of the public until days after Springsteen appeared in a high-profile ad for automaker Jeep during the Super Bowl, with a message of national unity amid the country’s polarized political divisions.

The television ad, his first product endorsement, was filmed in Kansas and urged people to find common ground. Days later, an unidentified source leaked the news of Springsteen’s DUI charges to the celebrity website TMZ.com.

After the story broke, Jeep announced it would pull the Super Bowl ad, issuing a statement that said it “would be inappropriate for us to comment on the details of a matter we have only read about and we cannot substantiate.” But the company added, “it’s also right that we pause our Big Game commercial until the actual facts can be established.”

Springsteen has not commented on the matter and his attorney on Thursday did not respond to requests for comment.

The Nov. 14 arrest occurred in Sandy Hook, a part of the federal Gateway National Recreation Area on the New Jersey coast at the northeast tip of Monmouth County, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service had confirmed on Wednesday.

“Springsteen was cooperative throughout the process,” Brenda Ling said in a statement.

Why the matter stayed well below the radar for so long may be due in part to the jurisdictional bounds of Gateway.

The sprawling area spans 27,000 acres from Sandy Hook in New Jersey to Breezy Point in New York, and is policed by the National Park Service whose park rangers are federal law enforcement officers. However, violations at Sandy Hook —such as drunken driving and other traffic matters — are run through U.S. District Court in Newark and adjudicated in a part of the federal courts known as enclave court. Unlike tickets handled in a New Jersey town’s municipal court, tickets issued by rangers are typically not public record, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office.

A hearing had been scheduled this week for Wednesday, but had been delayed to later in the month.

Springsteen lives in Colts Neck, about 12 miles away from Sandy Hook, and is no stranger to the area, where he has used its beaches as backdrops for several music and film projects, including the album cover for 1987′s “Tunnel of Love.” "

Only the fact that this whole thing made the headlines makes me being incredible disappointed in the media right now.  Put on top all the theories and misinformation (or the lack of official information).

The fact that Jeep pulled the commerial from youtube is plain ridiculous. What a waste of dollars ;-) What ahppened to NOT guilty until PROVEN otherwise........

Afterall the man is just human, and I am sure that all of us do or have done this as well. He's just unlucky for being spotted doing so.

I'll be GROWIN' UP just FOR YOU Boss!       ~       Brucebase Wiki

We are in a time, in America, where everyone is held accountable for every action.  There is a demand also for people to apologize and take responsibility for actions and behaviors well in the past, because the societal norms have changed.  What is petty to some, outrages others.  As rediculous as the entire arrest and current process may seem, at this point it just has to play itself out. The deed is done.  Bruce has made no official statement.  Jeep, a corporation, does what corporations do to protect themselves.
All we can say is:  I hope this is not the big surprise Bruce was planning for his fans this year.  🤔🤔🤔

Not looking for a fight here.

The greater percentage of citizenry hold  Trump accountable.  Proper administration of justice, penalty, retribution, punishment - what have you - is something else.   In an America fighting for Black Lives to Matter, where Me Too recognizes offensive treatment of women by men, of course there are people held accountable who ‘don’t pay a price’.  That is in itself a whole other argument about politics, gender, race, wealth and religion.   It’s worthy to debate. However, this is not the correct forum for that, and it’s a subject I prefer not to currently expand time on.

The simple point I was, and am still making is that “it’s happened”.   Like speculation years ago over the E Street Band continuing as a band if X, Y, or Z member died.   What happened with Bruce and the Ranger has happened.   The facts and the accusations from both sides will come out in court, and a verdict will be rendered.   I don’t say justice, I say verdict.  Until then, there is no reason to wail.

As for Jeep pulling the ad, correct me if I have it wrong, but isn’t there a clip or two where Bruce takes a belt out of a shot glass?   Everyone IS super sensitive in America at this moment.  Anything that might be an Uh-Oh is highlighted. This goes for actors, politicians, corporate executives, everyday people.   Yes, people DO get away with ‘things’, ‘crimes’, ‘behaviors’, what-have-you, while others are punished or suffer.  That is not just America, it’s the world, it’s life, it’s history.

All I said was that America is now hypersensitive to the idea of accountability.  Whatever happened between Bruce and the The Ranger is going to have its moment in the sun.

......Or be buried at the edge of town in darkness if Bruce and the court wish to settle it that way.

Will you be happy if it turns out that Bruce was in the wrong, and because he is ‘rich and powerful’ it all conveniently goes away?   Would it be better if he pays a price - monetarily, career wise?  Would it be satisfactory if whatever the causes or reasons for the entire event, right or wrong, he brushes it off?  Is forgiving?  Pays penance?   Learns a hard lesson?  Should he be found to have been innocently and unfairly persecuted, should we then wear little Fender guitars with Bruce nailed across it around our necks to forever remember the injustice?  What if he just writes a double gatefold album about fucked up low wage Federal Rangers in state parks and the import has a bonus single?

I am more concerned about a real life crisis, getting a Covid vaccine shot, at the moment.  My top 20 priorities in that order - shot, shot, shot, shot,......

Apologies to any and all for any pontification or offenses.

peace brother

Q2, I'm with you on three points:

1) I want my shot, shot, shot.  (But can't seem to get an appt.)

2) I want Bruce to mull this over and be in a mood for a couple of weeks  and as he usually does write some terrific songs...  ( I can see him in concert start the notes for St. Trooper and sing Mr. Park Ranger please don't stop me....

3) I already wear two of the same medals Bruce has around his neck so I'll skip the Fender cross.

I already know he's innocent and I honestly believe the Ranger embellished his remarks on the two tests.  I read the report as can any of us. When they take DWI training there are always 5 preliminary tests given and this guy only gave two.  Either not trained well, young with no experience or an old timer with an axe to grind.  Either way this will go in Bruce's favor.

Even though I seldom drink and obviously DUI is wrong, I've always despised MADD, they are just so shrill and self righteous. Listen to this bullshit, and it's a fact that normally the Park Service does not disclose summonses, even for DUI:

"Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a national advocacy organization, condemned the Park Service’s delay in disclosing Mr. Springsteen’s arrest.

“The fact that this arrest was not revealed by authorities in New Jersey until after Springsteen’s appearance driving a Jeep in a high-priced Super Bowl commercial is infuriating,” the group’s president, Alex Otte, said Wednesday in a statement.

“Victims and families deserve for every drunk-driving offense to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as a violent, 100 percent preventable crime every time. No excuses, no exceptions."

I’ve never been a Bruce Springsteen fan. I don’t own any of his albums or CDs and attended one of his concerts at Giants Stadium in the mid-80′s, mostly to see what the attraction was.

I don’t much care for his lefty politics, either, but he, like everyone else, has a right to hold them and express them.

My music major is 50s and 60s doo-wop (the finest stuff ever put on vinyl) with a minor in country as performed by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

My iPod, however, does have a Springsteen number — “Jersey Girl” recorded live in 1981 at the Meadowlands Arena.

It occupies space on my iPod because I am married to a subject of the song title — a full-blooded, Italian girl born and raised in Orange, a quintessential Jersey girl.

As Springsteen growls “tonight I’m gonna take that ride across the river to the Jersey side,” and works his way through his expression of love for his “Jersey girl,” it never fails to stir memories of people, places and events in the nearly 60 years I’ve lived here.

Now that I’ve made clear that my Springsteen fandom consists of one song and I’m not a “Bruce-right-or-wrong” type, I’m comfortable weighing in on his arrest last November for driving while intoxicated in the Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook.

If the rather scant accounts that have emerged thus far are, indeed, accurate, the early morning episode has set up written all over it.

Springsteen, according to reports, stopped while on a motorcycle run and accepted a shot of tequila from a fan while park rangers watched from a distance.

Once he began to drive off, the rangers flagged him down and ticketed him for driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Despite a park ranger’s account that Springsteen smelled of alcohol and flunked field tests, his blood alcohol content registered .02. In New Jersey, .08 is the presumptive level for intoxication.

You do the math.

It’s virtually certain that the rangers recognized Springsteen (he’s an easily recognizable guy) and concluded that a celebrity bust would draw some attention.

There will be suspicion also in some pro-Springsteen quarters that the singer’s outspoken criticism of political figures played a role in the officers’ actions.

Unfair, perhaps, since no evidence has surfaced thus far to suggest it did but in today’s hyper-politicized environment, speculation doesn’t always respect boundaries or logic.

It isn’t the first time police officers parked near bars and clubs waiting for patrons to leave only to pull them to the curb a block or so away and administer field tests.

Sobriety checkpoints are common, even though critics have complained the random nature of the stops violate the “probable cause” requirement.

There is no dispute that anyone driving under the influence of alcohol, whether on a motorcycle or in a motor vehicle, should be punished. The dangers such actions pose must be minimized by strict law enforcement. Death, serious injuries and shattered lives cannot be tolerated.

A court will eventually decide the outcome of Springsteen’s arrest unless, of course, an accommodation is reached and the matter settled.

The .02 blood alcohol reading, if accurate, will be difficult to move past in Springsteen’s case. His alcohol consumption — one or two shots of tequila, according to reports — appears to have been confirmed, but whether the circumstances justified a driving while intoxicated charge is problematic.

The officers involved will lay out their version of events in support of their decision and may well be called upon to respond to questions concerning their motives; i.e. whether the celebrity of the defendant or his political leanings played a role.

It’s unclear at this stage when the matter will reach a court but it is certain to draw more than the usual amount of attention normally paid to a municipal court proceeding.

In the meantime, I’ll consider drafting a petition to “Free the Colts Neck 1,” while relaxing in my recliner, affixing my earbuds and listen to “Jersey Girl.”

As I posted on 2/11 here: "I predict he will wind up pleading guilty to some BS (no pun intended) charge like drinking in a restricted area. How can it be reckless driving if the cop didn't see him do anything, plus no field sobriety tests? [ok he did do some] .... the prosecutor will look at this and say, I am not taking this losing case to trial. Will drop the DUI charge. "
