After finding my cases of bootlegs, cd burner, mailing bubble envelopes, blanks in my storage unit.....

I thought back on all the years of downloading and trading on SPL

I rarely use my CD player and have uploaded most the the bootlegs on an external drive that I can access on my system for listening.

Now with my subscription to Nugs.net I have access to all these concerts.

Is it time to let the bootlegs CD's go ?

Any thoughts or shared experiences welcomed

I say let them go.  If you want to play Santa.offer them for free on the boards or eBay.  You'll probably make some old timer's day that still uses that CD Player.

I'm sure you've seen our saved post at the top of the forums to one of the top sharers through the years to our community,  Neil left me his entire collection of DVD.s, probably the largest collection of all time.  They were all digitized and given to Monmouth University for their collection of Bruce's music.

I realize it feels like you are giving away a part of your soul, all those years of shopping and trading for them.  It's like giving away memories.  But now their taking up space and you'll never listen to them again.  If you have notes on them, add the notes to the digital copy either a .jpg or a word doc.

Anyway that's my 2 cents.

Funny, we are really scaling down in the Spring (going to a condo) and I have given away so much stuff (loads of Capitals, Manchester United, Springsteen items). Just don't need it anymore. The only thing of sentimental value I kept are ticket stubs. I binned all my old CD's that I made from loads of vines from back in the day.  That was kind of sad but I don't even have anything to play them in anymore.

Even with a Nugs-subscribtion you are not certain of a lifetime supply of these concerts. A good example is the music that was removed from Spotify (some of the musics we do like, eg. Nils Lofgren, Neil Young)

I do not have a nugs subscribtion, but I am sure, if I had one, I just stored my collection. However. I also read you have transferred your collection already to HDD, or other media, which is already a valid backup in my opinion. I hardly buy the physical music anymore (except a few artists I really like and deserve my support by buying their music).

So that said, toss the physical collection, especially since you have not played any of it in years. It's the same here, and I should actually listen to my own advise ;-) Though I do not miss the space it occupies, therefore I may as well leave it there to linger.

Back it up to more that one hard drive or different type of media.  Like you said, an external hard drive? Buy another one, back it up again. Hard drives fail.  IO personally backed it all up to bluray discs. Very time consuming but done. And I have the Bluray discs in two separate locations 1000 miles apart, lol.  It all fits inside a sneaker box.

Very obviously, I am in the minority, and this is personal opinion and has nothing to do with wisdom, smarts, or practicalities but,

I would remove all the discs and inserts and toss the bulky plastic cases. Put everything in thin vinyl or paper holders and compact everything that way.  Do you need 5 different copies of the same broadcast or audio tape from the same original source with 5 different ‘remasterings’? No.  Just keep the best.  Do you have a handful of items that are especially meaningful to you?  Keep them.  Make this hard decision in steps.  You can always throw things away.  You can’t retrieve them once gone.  It’s painful to count the Crystal Cats before you as you trash them and total one by one the number you paid $50 or $75 each for, believing that they would be priceless artifacts for eternity and you could one day retire on their resale value. (To ease pain, remember that they did serve you well.  You consumed the music like an expensive meal.  You enjoyed the dining and long ago paid the bill.)  I trashed most of my cassettes, but kept some masters or first gen. copies plus things I did not have on a hard disc.  Yea, you can digitize it all, but then you get into the arguments about analog (masters) over digital, and that is another horse let out of the coral.

I suggest that whatever you chose to eliminate from your collection, try to rehome it first.  I have seen vinyl crash only to see a revival in a new generation. I have lived through the golden and lead eras of cassette tapes.  I have seen CDs rise as the greatest thing since Boston Cream Pie only to become coasters.  I am seeing streaming make physical media look like great grandpa’s walker. (I sound like Rutger Hauer’s final soliloquy in Blade Runner).  I have total confidence that within the limited years I have left, I will see a new format arise that will make streaming as we know it, quaint and humorously obsolete.  I don’t buy into the argument that ‘old media’ is either useless or just for a country of old men, it’s just different.   This is, in fact, a world where most people believe in resurrection. 🤔  I firmly believe that most of what we easily get for free now will eventually be monetized and cost $$$ in the future (hellooooo Napster).   I personally have no faith in nor love for things I can’t see or touch, so no faith in the cloud.  (I will never buy ‘property’ in the metaverse.)    I am starting an obscene amount of sentences with “ I “.    I apologize.

But the bottom line for you is (a) remember that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, (b) listen to young Bob Dylan’s advice: “don’t trust your leaders, watch your parking meters” and (c) above all, heed the wisdom of Digital Underground: “Doowutchyalike”.

- ah, addendum - when you decide to finally toss your old crappy vinyl, like your Script Cover, Blinded 45 picture sleeve, stock copy of Spirit In The Night, European Rosalita 45, test pressing of WEISS and such, I volunteer to give them a loving second home…….

Q2 and I rarely agree on much and as a whole we are almost polar opposites once again.  However I do agree on one part of his argument. Hold on to the vinyl, first of all we've had  a resurgence in Vinyl and they seem to hold their value. Plus you can buy a record player now that will digitize vinyl and the cost is fairly inexpensive.  So you'll have a digital backup unless of course it's still in the sleeve untouched.

So we agree in part, a very small part at that.

Are you calling me a magnet?  Are you talking to me? 🤓

When asked about my political designation I always reply ‘radical pragmatic’.   I enjoy debate (that’s very different than confrontation).  It would be a hell of a boring world if everyone was just like me.       Except, of course, everyone else’s clothes and shoes would match my taste and fit me perfectly.

I'm pondering whether to junk all the old burned discs, save for a few sentimental examples, but I'll keep the CC originals and such because I suspect they'll have value again someday, just like the vinyl records I almost tossed but didn't.

It's been a long time comin' but now it's here
Yeah, now it's here

Thank You SPL for the perspective, wisdom, experience and advise.

I still do listen to my vinyl.  I have 2 vinyl alums of each release.  One unopened and stored appropriately and the other I use for my listening pleasure.  So  my vinyl will stay.

The orginal Cd's will stay

The bootlegs I will offer in the appropriate SPL section.

Now I just need to sort through it all and then offer it up.
