Terry is female, has to be female because she tells lies.

This "debate" is like one of those bad urban legends which keeps reappearing. "Layin' here in the dark, you're like an angel on my chest" pretty much seals it, as do the above mentioned "slow dancin" and "sad eyes" comments. Terry is clearly a woman whom the narrator has a close friendship with and possibly a romantic relationship.
