Bruce Springsteen on Broadway: Boss tells Howard Stern show is draining but he loves it
Bruce Springsteen must get pretty drained after his famous four-hour concerts with the E Street Band.
But how draining is his “Springsteen on Broadway,” a show that’s two hours long with nary an electric guitar or drum set on stage? Plenty draining, said Howard Stern, who relayed what the Boss told him after the March 14 performance of the music play.
“(Springsteen) said it’s emotionally draining but he loves doing it,” said Stern on the Monday, March 26 episode of his SiriusXM radio show. “He explained that what he gets to do with the show is go back and visit his parents and visit his neighborhood (in Freehold where he grew up), he’s able to go there emotionally.”
The Boss talks about his parents and his working class upbringing in Freehold each night at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
The show moves viewers to tears, including Reese Witherspoon, who admitted to Stephen Colbert that the show reduced her to a “sobbing puddle of human tears.” The Boss himself teared up at the Sept. 19 rehearsal of the show at Monmouth University, according to attendees.
“You can see the guy’s on stage and he’s pouring his heart out,” Stern said. “So he likes that aspect. It is draining but he likes being able to go back and visit (his youth.)”
“Springsteen on Broadway” was recently extended through Dec. 15 with the Dec. 15 show now being called the “final” show of the Broadway run, which has been extended three times.
Tickets for the newly-announced “Springsteen on Broadway” shows go on sale 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, through Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system.

“You’ll never see another guy like him again,” said Stern cast member Fred Norris. “I don’t think there’s anybody in rock who can do what he does in that theater.”
