if you want one of the greatest live audiences on a disc than 'summertime bruce' is your pick of the crop. not the most 'crystal' clear recording but still most enjoyable. the opening summertime blues is simply the greatest stadium opener of this summer's tour.
forget about the broadcast cd: '4th of july' sounds thin and compressed.
but than again, if you go for quality you can't tgo wrong with cc's san jose double.
and if you got patience, somwhere in september great cc sets from both gothenborg gigs, milan and barcelona will turn up...
I don't get this discussion! Currently Godfather is the ultimate Bruce label giving us excellent receordings of various shows from present and past. Great upgrades, original recordings etc. All this crystal cat hype. i got their new releases and they are identical in quality to godfather allthough not in such great packaging! Godfather Amsterdam is amazing and so is Milano, and both are original recordings. Paris is soundwise and also showwise the best release of this badge. Hamburg is great with a great broad sound spectrum and instrument seperation only Gothenburg is for the completist as the sound is quite compressed. I also got Crystal Cat's Basie theatre which is an underwhelming recording that was also on jungleland. very loud audience participation etc. Their Phantom magic night For Danny is great though allthough that was also on Dime. Best thing to do is get the Magic tour Rarities 3Cd on Godfather which is an amazing release and has all the rare US leg songs including the Danny shows songs aswell as the last songs they did with danny!

Excellent recordings? Maybe they were before GF fucked them all up.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. 99% of what Godfather releases comes from STOLEN (that means original tapes from other tapers) material. And what hurts the most is that they do some editing on these tapes which almost every time results in a downgraded version.
I can understand where you're coming from artworkwise, but soundwise they are just CRAP.

I wouldn't mind if they just release original versions, as nothing is cooler than owning a silver cd with pretty artwork. I know they steal other people work, but it's a disgrace that they fuck up the sound....
The Godfather uses ORIGINAL tapes most of the time. So here's a list of their originals, made by their home taper and besides on original silver discs on Godfather they are NOT available, unless other labels used the godafther discs as their original. Behind the title are some remarks I made!

I don't understand all the GFR slamming, they release great, collectible releases. For instance, they were the only one who did a great release of the Shea Stadium shows back in 03 with collectible bonustracks, great packaging etc. All releases are worth their money with mini posters, booklets etc. They are a good competitor to the long reigning champion Crystal Cat and the more great releases/labels the better for us fans. So stop whining when you don't know what you are talking about! And since WHEN can you STEAL a bootleg? if you don't want your recordings to be in the hands of bootleggers or whatever don't spread them on DIME or wherever. That's the risk you take. In the past, before internet when you sent out your cassettes all over the world you never knew where they ended up and sometimes you wouldn't even know. i am happy to say some of my stuff turned up on some great bootlegs (CD and back in the past LP) and some of my obtained videomaterial even turned up on official releases. Do I feel bothered? No, why should I? Great material deserve a great, silver release and i'd be happy to share my stuff for a great silver release. And those who still think making bootleg cd's is a way of making money...well, wake up and smell the coffee!!

exactly steenponyboy, gfr has quite some good titles worth checking out, as you listed. and some people will always moan 'bout cc equal releases (think about their milano 03 triple) that sometimes sound better. but that's a choice everybody takes. i personally do not collect all these releases but do listen to all of 'em. so who steals from who?? let's put it this way, those who want to download the stuff are free to do so, those who want to get the silver beauties, enjoy them.
my winner of this season goes to the tremendous gfr compilation something in those nights: a fantastic 3cd-run through the rare tracks from the spring us-tour.
of course, also available without the booklets and mini sleeves somewhere on the magic of this wonderful net. Roll your tapes, amigos!
Speaking of CC worthy, their Count Basie Theatre isn't an original but tape already available on Dime and many other torrent sites. The quality is debatable and now it's a good release because CC did it? Don't get me wrong I LOVE CC's releases, they do a helluva job most of the time but I also don't get the GFR vs CC battle among some assholes here!

I`ll be damned and struck by lightning if Hamburg 2008 isn`t my tape, only compressed like you wouldn`t believe possible. About as convincing a remaster as a giraffe with sunglasses trying to get into a polar bear only golf club.
At least get a new sound engineer or get out there and do your own.

Steenponny, you are not going to win this arguement as there are too many people on this board who are not big fans of GF.

To be fair I think GF have brought out some half decent boots such as Singin' Our Birthday Song and The Remastered Darkenss Outtakes, although that is just my opinion. However, they have also released some real stinkers such as The Punk Meets The Godfather and Ullevi 2008. They do have a tendency to compress the detail and soul out of recordings which most of us dislike; CC also use compression but in most cases they seem to have got the balance about right between cleaning up a recording whilst retaining the essence of the original.

The issue about 'stealing' recordings made by bootleggers is a wider arguement.
There will always be bootleggers and there will always be an individual or bootleg label like GF who will come along and 'remaster' and/or issue arecording under their own name/label, this is always the danger as soon as any tape is released into the public domain. GF are not the only label who have been guilty of this over the years. The original taper may not like it but it is a fact of life.



It's not my intention to WIN a discussion! but in a discussion you RESPECT someones vision on the subject despite the fact whether you agree or not. Whether a recording sounds nice is a matter of opinion/taste and I happen to like to the GFR and give arguments for it. For instance i like their version of Milano 85 over the CC version, they are both great but i happen to prefer that one. CC has some great D&D releases but GFR's Milwaukee and Berlin are the top D&D recordings in my opinion!

Still, a bootlegger steals from the artist, on the other hand, bootlegs keep the spirit alive and broadens the legacy of an artist! When you release a tape on Dime or Jungeland or you trade it the source is in the open and free to grab for anyone,including bootleggers. If you want to make money with your tapes that's fine so offer it to bootleggers if you think it is worth it. if not? Stop whining when it's used and feel proud that your material turned up on a genuine CD and is preserved for the future and sometimes gets its place in history!

Badabing: it's not yours! period! I downloaded your version on Dime though and personally think it's better allthough i heard from many people they prefer the GFR over yours and even over many other cd's of the tour. As said; a matter of TASTE!
