On 1989, the Grateful Dead were shredding through their summer tour, making for a notable summer that saw the group’s energy spike and the ensemble become increasingly more dialed into one another as the tour progressed. One particularly special moment for the group was during their performance at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, which went down on June 21st of that year — 28 years ago today. During their performance, the Grateful Dead was joined by Clarence Clemons on the sax, who joined the crew for the majority of the second set and the show’s encore.

After the second set opener of “Scarlet Begonias,” the E Street Band saxophonist came out to join the group for “Hell In A Bucket” without the group even missing a beat as they transitioned into the song. Clemons stayed on with the group for the rest of the second set, save drums and “Space,” later reemerging as the ambient number slowly progressed into “Truckin’.” The Dead with the addition of the brass makes for a fun listen, and it’s clear the band was having a grand time as well, as evidenced by the energy of this set. Luckily, the show was broadcast via pay-per-view, meaning we now have video record of what went down at Shoreline nearly 30 years ago.

You can watch the full set for yourself, or check out select song highlights from the night below.
