The Details

Over the weekend my youngest son was using my PC. While playing games at AddictingGames.com he became agititated. He slammed down the mouse and proceeded to knock my keyboard to the floor. He said upon returning the keyboard to its shelf, a button was accidentally grazed that has put my PC in "sleep mode". This is the message he said he saw on the screen.

The Result

As a result, I cannot power up my PC. Whatever happened powered down my PC immediately. I have a 2 year old HP Pavillion running Windows XP. Also, there is a green LCD on the rear of the tower that has flashed ever since the incident. I tried using Google to see if that would help, but so far to no avail. Any suggestions by you would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Unplug it from the wall for awhile.

"I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion."

What exactly does it say/do when you try to power it up? How are you trying to power it up? I had a problem once and had to push & hold the power button for like 60 seconds. Is it that Energy Star thing on the monitor? I forget how I disabled that power management bull shit, it was a pain in the ass.

I am laughing my ass off right now in the knowledge that I am not the only parent that deals with this kind off stuff. My 4 year old daughter does the same thing when she gets frustrated at the games on noggin.com and nickjr.com.

I'm sure that that makes them happy to help.

I have a vendor who's calls I won't answer because I can't understand them. Email I can understand. Voicemail becomes just noise.

Maybe the power supply went bad. Does the back of the power supply smell burnt?

When I push the power button it does nothing. There is no burnt smell as far as I can tell. But, obviously, it's starting to look like there is a power supply issue. I just wanted to run this by everyone before I can take it somewhere to have it diagnosed.
To me, it sounds more likely that its the motherboard that fried.

Reasoning:

You said that it went into 'sleep mode' first. (If the powersupply went it just would have died)

You said it was an HP (notorious motherboard failure rate)

You said there was a small blinking green light on the back or something (no power = no blinky light)

The blinking light, btw, is a "morse code" for what is wrong. The same as the series of beeps that older computers made when you powered them up (Its refered to as P.O.S.T. "Power On System Test"). Its the check that the computer does before it starts. If you are getting that far - its not your powersupply.
