To me, it sounds more likely that its the motherboard that fried.
Reasoning:
You said that it went into 'sleep mode' first. (If the powersupply went it just would have died)
You said it was an HP (notorious motherboard failure rate)
You said there was a small blinking green light on the back or something (no power = no blinky light)
The blinking light, btw, is a "morse code" for what is wrong. The same as the series of beeps that older computers made when you powered them up (Its refered to as P.O.S.T. "Power On System Test"). Its the check that the computer does before it starts. If you are getting that far - its not your powersupply.
