Wembley is scheduled to start even earlier at 18.00.  The UK is obsessed with ensuring all concert goers attending performances by pension age rock stars are safely tucked up at home in bed by 11pm  with a cup of horlicks and a hot water bottle. Thus ensuring that the 20/30/40 something piss artists can get drunk, drop their knickers, puke up, have a fight and basically run riot at all hours of the night  without fear of coming across  people who selfishly want to spend circa 3-4 hours simply enjoying themselves listening to the likes of Bruce Springsteen.

Devoted Bruce Springsteen fans rock up 48 hours ahead of his gig at The Etihad

Their devotion is as legendary as The Boss' three and a half hour shows.

Their devotion is as legendary as The Boss’ three-and-a-half hour high octane shows.

But even for Bruce Springsteen fans one hard-core group have gone to extraordinary lengths to get the best view at The Etihad concert.

Today - more than 48 hours before the New Jersey rock star was due to climb on stage - they were queuing at Manchester City’s stadium.

Head of the pack was Steve Aitken, a car salesman from the badlands of Tunbridge Wells.

Steve Aitken, first in queue for Etihad concert

Steve said: “It is something that has happened at other Bruce concerts around the country. It is the hard core fans. We have a bit of a roll call and keep a record of who gets here first, and issue numbers to the early arrivals.

“In the past we have got chatting to Bruce’s security people, and security at the stadium, and the aim is that 15 minutes before the gates open for everyone else they will let us in.”

Today about two dozen fans were at the stadium.

Steve said: “That will probably be up to about 300 by tomorrow and 1,000 by Wednesday morning, the day of the concert.”

The early birds are hoping that The Etihad staff will organise a pen near the front of the stage for a 1,000 or so disciples of the superstar and his E Street Band.

Donna Bradnock, Penfold (corr), Karen Wynn, Abi Clay, Mark Colley, Julia Gregory and Jack Pool

Wednesday’s concert will be Bruce’s first in the UK during his River Tour - in which he plays every song from 1980’s The River album as well as crowd pleasers like Born To Run, Prove It All Night, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Because The Night, Thunder Road, and Dancing in the Dark.

The setlist usually concludes with one of his rock n roll rave ups including an epic cover of Twist and Shout by The Isley Brothers or Jimmy Cliff’s Trapped.

Bear in mind this is the same article that states that he sometimes ends his set with the "rock n roll rave up" that is Trapped!

E Street Band - the new American resistance

Seems it's pretty difficult to get to the show.
