Gotta say, this song has me completely mesmerized. Thematically, it reminds me of Neil Young's "Down By The River." Lyrics are tough to decipher, but kudos to Bruce for leaving the original vocal intact on the track. The music and the melody is just so beautiful and sad. Tried my hand at transcribing the lyrics as best as I could. If anyone hears something different, please chime in.
In the tall grass we held down
Down by the river we laid plans
Of what would and would not be
Was impossible to see
Their black boots shone in the sun
And there waiting on the Allenville train my baby's on
Little girl with long black hair
Do you know what lies beneath the long coats that they wear
Once I swore you'd ride with me (................)
Down where this river meets the sea (I'll make you mine forever more)
Over these dark hills I'd walk alone (Just to hold you in my arms)
To lie with you on a bed of stone
River blood red with the years
You can flood this settlement with a thousand tears
Wash away all that's been gone
But you'll never wash away these eyes
Or the, stray bullets that shot my baby down
Stray bullets that shot my baby down
Stray bullets that shot my baby down
Stray bullets that shot my baby down
STRAY BULLET
In the tall grass we held hands,
down by the river we made plans
of what would and would not be
it was impossible to see,
The black boots shown in the sun,
we were waitin' on the Annandale train with my baby to come,
little girl with the long black hair,
do you know what lies beneath the long coats that they wear,
Once I swore you'd ride with me, (to ride distant shores)
down where this river meets the sea, (to make you mine forever more)
over these dark hills I walk alone, (I still hold you in my arms)
alive with you on a bed of stone,
river blood red with the years,
you can flood this valley with a thousand tears,
wash away all that's been found,
but you'll never wash away the sound
of the stray bullet that shot my baby down, (stray bullet that shot my baby down)
of the stray bullet that shot my baby down, (stray bullet that shot my baby down)
of the stray bullet that shot my baby down, (stray bullet that shot my baby down)
of the stray bullet that shot my baby down, (stray bullet that shot my baby down)
of the stray bullet that shot my baby down...

Just listened to this and I have to say that my mind is blown away with this one...what a beautiful haunting song and I can't understand why this one has been hidden away for all these years....WOW!
Thank you Wizardus, i think you nailed it. Reminds me of "The Klansman."
Very dense and different. Kind of in the noir vein of Meeting Across the River and Something in the Night.
I think it's I will lie with you on a bed of stone and I think it's They were waiting on the Annandale Train and their black boots shown in the sun. I'm imagining a group of guys waiting to shoot someone on the train and the subject's significant other is also on the train.
