We've talked about it in the past. Now let's do it.

Let's name the Top 5 bootlegs for each tour, with as many as 5 more suggestions. The sound has to be pretty damn good for a boot to make the list, but sound quality is not the sole criteria. We'll weigh in the performance (i.e., the energy level, the setting, the setlist, etc.) because that matters, too. Otherwise we'd all be listening to the Atlanta Rising boot, which won't even make the list.

I'll keep a running list here at the top of what the consensus seems to be for each tour. It will change, of course.
Anybody who wants other ideas can probably dig through this thread someday for suggestions that fell short. There are going to be a lot of excellent boots that don't make the list.
So let's get started.

This is the 'Born In The USA' tour thread, covering the dates 1984-06-29 to 1985-10-02.

1984-07-12 East Troy (Alpine Valley Night, CC)
1984-07-13 East Troy (Alpine Valley 2nd Night, Ev2)
1984-07-26 Toronto (Part Of The Show)
1984-08-20 Meadowlands (A Special Night Vol. 2, Ev2)
1984-09-18 Philadelphia (The Last Time, Ev2)
1984-09-22 Pittsburgh (Where The Rivers Meet, E St Records)
1984-10-26 LA (Blood Ties Vol. 2, Ev2)
1984-10-31 LA (Halloween Confidential, Ev2)
1984-11-19 Kansas City (Roses In The Kansas Rain, Ev2)
1985-01-15 Charlotte (Perfect In '85, E St Records)
1985-06-21 Milan (Milano Night, CC)
1985-06-29 Paris (Breathless In Paris, Ev2)
1985-07-04 London (Independence Night, CC)
1985-08-09 Chicago (Warm Night In Chicago, Ev2)
1985-09-18 Oakland (The Shadow Of A Dream, Ev2)

I always thought that Independence Night and Alpine Valley Night were overrated. The two Oakland shows from 1985 are arguably the best recordings from the entire tour, but the 85 stadium shows don't have the great setlists from earlier in the tour.

We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

I would like to add 1984/7/13 EVs Alpine Valley 2nd Night as a representative for the very early stages in the tour and an alternate setlist opening with Thunder Road and EVs 1984/10/22 What Pulls People Apart again for setlist and sound.

Although, if we stick to 5 per tour, both would probably not make it as there should be at least one from Europe 85 and one from the final stadium run, that leaves only 3 for 1984...

Independence Night definitely is. Aside from the opening song, I don't think the show is that stand out.

And I hope that Paris doesn't make its way into the Top 5 for this Tour. Full soundboard? Great. But the show is average and I listen to at least 15 audience tapes instead.

From 1985, I'd say 30th September is marginally better from the Tour finale a couple of days later.

That's the problem, we don't want to overdo the options, the greater the choice the harder it will be to make an educated decision when it comes to poll time.

To me they both sound a bit thin judging from these samples http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=273307 compared to many others but obviously they are a lot of people's favourites. Chicago is fuller and warmer to my ears

Chicago is a superior recording for sure--in a whole other league compared to these Oaklands but the Oakland shows are much better performances. Chicago was done digitally. As were, from '84, Lincoln, Ames, Alpine Valley and Kansas City (I'm surely forgetting others). Also Indianapolis from Jan '85.
After listening to Alpine Valley 2nd Night from Ev2 in its entirety I highly recommend this one, Top 5 or not. Great sound, what a relief to hear a show from this tour and in this quality without the ridiculous boomy drum sound. Listen to the otherwise also great Chicago stadium show (same taper, by the way), what a difference. I have no idea how this compares to CC's Alpine Valley Night from the previous night, but this one is a keeper.

you all forgot 15-01-85 Perfect In 85.the only SBD of the tour.not perfect at all ,some glitches here and there, but other than that,an amazing Used Cars,a great Reason To Believe.
a splendid Prove it ,a beautiful Cant Help Falling in Love and a rare electric Johnny Bye-Bye.all SBD.it's priceless.

someone here statet that CC Independence Night is overrated.what?? are you thinking straight?

an acoustic Independence Day brings tears to my eyes every single time.i can't help it.

this one is one of the top 5 shows of the tour.

i also think 31-10-84 Hallowin confidential must be on the list.i only remember it as a great sound boot with some great covers.i don't remember much of a details.

i also think that the San Siro Marathon is the best boot of this show .ofcourse, must be on the list.

we also need one of the last GS shows of the tour,i go for the one with the Growin' Up bears story .what a great beautiful piece of thing.don't remember the date though.

TIA
Anyone who can shed some light on Milano Night and the other versions of this show? I said above I prefer San Siro Marathon because it has more of a stadium atmosphere but after a second listen it sounds like Milano Night is the same tape or at least was located at the same location but with the music being way more upfront. Listen to the applause during the second harmonica part in The River, for example...

Just because it has a nice unusual opening song doesn't make it a top 5 show. Both Philly and LA runs in 84 are better shows alone, with better sound on most as well (all the EV2 versions at least).

I dunno, the quiet, acoustic tracks sound good (best ever Johnny Bye Bye?), but the sound otherwise is pretty poor - the audience tapes are easier to listen to.
With Alpine Valley 2nd Night that's 17 - we're going to have to drop at least 5.

My Top 12 feeling:

1984-07-12 East Troy (Alpine Valley Night, CC)
1984-07-13 East Troy (Alpine Valley 2nd Night, Ev2)
1984-07-26 Toronto (Part Of The Show)
1984-08-20 Meadowlands (A Special Night Vol. 2, Ev2)
1984-09-18 Philadelphia (The Last Time, Ev2)
1984-09-22 Pittsburgh (Where The Rivers Meet, E St Records)
1984-10-31 LA (Halloween Confidential, Ev2)
1984-11-19 Kansas City (Roses In The Kansas Rain, Ev2)
1985-06-21 Milan (Milano Night, CC)
1985-06-29 Paris (Breathless In Paris, Ev2)
1985-07-04 London (Independence Night, CC)
1985-08-09 Chicago (Warm Night In Chicago, Ev2)
I?m with Randy, drop the dvd soundtracks. Also I don't think we need both Alpine Valley Nights although I definitely think the 2nd Night has better (clearer and warmer) sound than the CC, just compare the sax solo in Jungleland. We could further drop Where The Rivers Meet since the setlists of 84/8/20 and 84/9/18 are basically the same as this one. That would leave room for one of the Oaklands of 85 and one from the Final LA stand.
which GS show had the Growin' Up with the bears intro?

a once in a lifetime gem.we must have this show.

leave "Perfect" In 85 out,i listened to it yesterday .Racing is cut to pieces..
it's heartbreaking.

any shows you choose eventually, please have Reason To Believe ,Used Cars,Mansion and Nebraska.
these are must-have's in any Bitusa tour collection.these songs were performed with so much heart and such passion you could only listen to in the Darkness tour.

First night is much better performance vice. Setlist is also imo better. There are so many little things that make this show top 3 bitusa tour:

"Audience tape - Premiere and one of only two outings for Man At The Top. Bruces sings a (very) short version of Sad Eyes during the middle of Backstreets (what a teaser). A rare ?No Surrender? that does not include the harmonica solo after the second chorus, but has Bruce singing the Sha-la-la verse (Acoustic version #1). ?Pink Cadillac? is performed in a rearranged version of the single with a lengthly intro about The Garden of Eden. Clarence is introduced as ?The eighth wonder? during ?Sherry Darling?. Also the start of Cadillac Ranch is extended as Bruce's guitar fails to work. Detroit medley contains an excellent I hear a train. No Travellin' band included in the medley yet."

which version of the 2nd night you're talking about Patrick, I want to listen to it; I found on the BTX mp3 index the Rick B?s version, is this the one ?
