Recommendations for an affordable field recorder?

I'm kicking around the idea of buying my first field recorder. Since I'm not an expert I'm searching for an easy to use one which can record in WAV/MP3 and has good sound with the build-in mics.

My budget is limited to approx. 150EUR. Therefore so far the Zoom H1 and the Tascam DR-05 are my favourites.

Does someone has experiences with these devices? Or are there any other recommendations at this price range?

Can I ask what you're planning on using it for?

I'm assuming that you're using it to record live music and my responses are based on that assumption.

Tascam makes a good recorder (I have a DR-07 that I've used).  I'm unfamiliar with the Zoom but have seen other tapers using that brand putting out good quality recordings.  Battery life, easy level setting and locking mode are features I look for.

Roland/Edirol also makes a good unit and you might be able to find a used unit in the $100.00 price range

The recorder is less important than the mics.  Early on I used the Core Sounds with the base roll off. They're a good omni directional mic.  As the technology moved forward in audio recording, the cardiod (A more directional mic) became the standard.  Church Audio (https://www.church-audio.com/) mics are what I use now.  When I purchased them they were a smaller company and were only selling on EBay.  A mic and preamp combo can cost upwards of $300.00.

If you're just using it for voice recording, you won't need to purchase additional mics.  The Tascam and Roland/Edirol units both have internal mics.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply and recommendations. Really appreciated.

As you assumed the device is planned to be used for recording live music. So far it looks like I'll buy the Zoom H1. Battery life is up to ten hours, has a lock mode and seems easy to use. Combined with CA 14 or AT mics it should bring a pretty good result.
