During my two shows for this tour (Oakland / LA #2) in the back pit both nights the band playing was what I focused on.

First off, Steve is really fun to watch but also it seems that he is really playing the sidekick and vocals harking back to the good ole' days (you can define them for yourself).  His guitar playing on several songs is great, his backing vocals on songs Wanna Marry You intro and Ramrod are really great.  Great to see his passion on this tour

Now for Charlie  - They need to turn the sound down on his organ.  Too prominent in the mix and also his tempo is too fast on several songs.  I miss the Phantom.  Also no real stage presence.

Jake - WOW  - He is really taking his role up front.  His playing is confident and spot on. I didn't get JL but from what I heard on line it seems he is on it.  Also he rescued Bruce during HH when the crowd surfed him too far left w/o missing a beat.  I can see by the end of the tour he and Bruce will strike the classic poses that Clarence used to do.

Gary - The coolest one on stage.  Reliable and on it.  Really shines on the slow songs

Max / professor - awesome as usual

Patty / Suzie - Add to the mix and vocals.  Suzie's playing on DTMHT/AL was top notch.

The munchkin (Nils) - Adds to the mix but let's remember that he wasn't around till after the River so his contributions are really present during the post River segments.  We got BTN and of course he is perfect.

Now how none of them have to pee during the show I have no idea

Pretty much agree with everything you said - especially the peeing part! How I lasted through 4 shows only going once during the pre-show wait on the floor, I'll never know. Verging on TMI, so my sole caveat below.

After Danny passed, I noticed Charlie struggling to manage some of Danny's parts, particularly I think Living in the Future. Not that he played them badly, but you could tell he was unsuccessfully trying to duplicate them exactly. I don't know if that was Bruce's, Danny's, or Charlie's wish, but as time passed he began to manage it. I could close my eyes and almost imagine Danny was there, but I stopped doing that because realizing he wasn't and never would be again was too distressing.

I never thought Charlie was mixed too high (and you can usually tell from the pit, where the mix is a bit more direct than other locations). So I think this tour mixes him a bit higher, as I did hear that he was noticeable during flourishes as on BTR, for example. It might have sounded even louder in the pit, but that place has sadly not been my home for a long time now. Best I get these days is near the back rail, or on it as in Phoenix.

Jake, imo, stood out already much of the time despite a stage full of horns on the previous tour. Bruce was already training him as sidekick then as well. By the end of this tour there will be younger fans who wonder who played before this youngster joined the band. There's a bit of sadness in that - but a bit of triumph as well. He can and does nail parts Clarence was having trouble with  sometimes in his last year or two. Absolutely the right replacement, an organic complement to the more, as has been said, workmanlike Charlie.

Long live the E Street Band!

Mike

Don't forget Danny was an improvisational genius. He switched things up subtlety and sublimely.  Traits like that cannot and will not be ever copied.  It's a tough learning curve and  can make it real hard on the musician that follows.

I think Charlie is finally higher in the mix because he's comfortable now and doing a fabulous job.  Like i said earlier, no one can replace Danny but I think Charlie has learned to be himself and play in his own style within the framework of the ESB.  I think Bruce and JL recognize that and have  him higher in the mix now just like when Danny was there.  They did the same with Jake as he was learning, he was lower in the mix when he started out, but not any more.

Each has come into his own.  At least in my humble opinion.

My main observation has been Steven. He is on his game. He has been in the background the last few tours but The River was an album he co-produced. He is front and center just about EVERY song, and I am glad to see it.  His vocals, his guitar playing, his presence, so much more than recently. I spent as much time watching him as I do Bruce the 3 shows I've been to.

Very cool. Yes I bet he is

Had a similar experience at the Adelaide show in 2014. Happened to be right up front aligned with Steve's position on stage and I too spent as much time watching him as I did Bruce. Watching and hearing his playing, I hadn't quite fully realised his contribution to the bands music live. His playing was great and spot on. And his presence, he is great to watch.

Also his playing stood out more for me in the mix from my position as I assume he would normally need to hear his own playing more on stage. I could easily distinguish his playing from the rest, and in a good way. The mix and sound at the show was wonderful. A great arena for a Bruce show!

It opened my eyes and ears regarding Steve. Loved it!!! What a great show that was!!

Cheers,

Hazy

Ummmm.......ahhhhh......LOL!!

Looking back I kinda wished I'd gotten some photos of the scene that night, it was totally surreal. But no one dared do ANYTHING that might, um sounds stupid but spook his security (who were very discrete btw, they blended in, didn't notice them tell later) or scare them off I guess. We collectively just wanted them to feel at ease and enjoy a relaxed drink and not feel hassled at all. And everyone there behaved perfectly and casually, like no big deal And of course Steve was feeling very comfortable and at ease in his cool PJ bottoms

The constant feeling was, can this be real? Ok guys just be cool...

Cheers,

Hazy
