Max Weinberg to talk E Street Band at Asbury Park fest

"Mighty" things are happening at the Asbury Park Music and Film Festival.

That’s because Mighty Max Weinberg, drummer for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, will be featured in “Bob Santelli Presents A Conversation With Max Weinberg,” 4:45 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at the House of Independents in Asbury Park in a festival event.

Santelli, a Point Pleasant Beach native, is the executive director of the Grammy Museum who has participated in music history-making moments from the Stone Pony to the White House.

The two will discuss Weinberg’s  career as a member of the E Street Band.

“It will be similar to what (Santelli) did with Bruce (Springsteen) at the Pollak Theatre, but it will be with Max,” said James Wark, the executive producer of the Asbury Park Music and Film Festival.

Santelli’s “A Conversation with Bruce Springsteen” took place in January at the Pollak  on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch. Weinberg joined the E Street Band in 1974 and is a band leader in his own right and a TV personality, thanks to his tenures on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.”

When he’s not on the road with the E Street Band, Weinberg is often a visitor of Lakehouse Music in Asbury Park. The  beneficiaries of the festival, including the music programs at the Hope Academy Charter School, the Hip Hop Institute of the Asbury Park branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County, and the Asbury Park Summer Recreation Music, are overseen by the Lakehouse staff and the Asbury Park Music Foundation.

Weinberg conducted a special clinic for students of the Lakehouse Music Academy in January.

“Max is going to be around the over the weekend,” Wark said. “He’s always been a big supporter of the Lakehouse and these (Asbury Park Music Foundation) programs.”

"Cocktails with Max," which includes a 30 minute cocktail party with Weinberg, a premium seat to the “Conversation,” and other goodies, is also being offered.

Prior to the Weinberg event, “Dylan Archives II,” in which rare Bob Dylan archives from the University of Tulsa will be screened, begins at 3 p.m. at the House of Independents. Last year, selections from Dylan archives were screened at the House of Independents as part of the festival. Santelli and rock photographer Danny Clinch were the hosts.

Tickets for “Dylan Archives II,” beginning at $20, and for “Bob Santelli Presents A Conversation With Max Weinberg,” beginning at $30, go onsale 10 a.m. Friday, March 31 through apmff.com. The "Cocktails with Max" VIP package is $150.

Other APMFF events include the premiere of the documentary about the former Upstage Club in Asbury Park, “Just Before the Dawn: Riot. Redemption. Rock ‘n’ Roll,” by filmmaker Tom Jones, followed by a Q&A and all-star jam featuring Southside Johnny and the Upstage legends, Friday, April 21 at the Paramount; Mike and the Mechanics in a taping of the TV series “Front & Center, 8 p.m. Friday, April 21 at the House of Independents;  Robert Randolph and the Family Band with the Matt O’Ree Band, April 21 at the Stone Pony; Steven Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul, April 22 at the Paramount; and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band April 23, also at the Paramount.
