(Nashville, TN) - Musician Rich Lynch spent most of his life in New Jersey before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in order to pursue a full-time recording career. So, he was well familiar with that state's favorite son Bruce Springsteen and like millions of others he counted himself a fan and admirer.

"I've definitely seen Bruce in concert over thirty times since the 80's," Lynch recalled, adding, "and, I've shook his hand on at least three occasions."

Rich Lynch the fan never imagined he would write a song about him that could be considered anything less than reverential. But, then Bruce announced an 80-show run of dates on Broadway in New York City.

"I read a lot of the feedback on Springsteen forums and his own social media outlets," Lynch said describing the genesis for his latest track produced in Music City. "A lot of fans were disappointed in the extremely high tickets prices and they were expressing their feelings on these public websites."

But, seeing some comments on message boards wasn't enough to trigger the process of lining up studio time to create a new modern rock anthem. There was another factor that was provided by the title of the show itself.

"Something was bothering me about the name of the production," Lynch recalled revealing how he came up with the name for his latest online single. "I'm a creative person and often I'll employ unusual methods to help inspire my songwriting."

Lynch printed out an image of the marquee that read "Springsteen On Broadway" and using a scissors and some tape he cut out each individual letter and started rearranging them until he found a perfect anagram containing the unlikely but strangely fitting phrase:

"Ow, A Bad Singer's Pony Rent".

"Once I stopped laughing I realized there might be something here," Lynch told reporters about that spark of inspiration that fueled the new number. "I quickly crafted three verses dealing with the universal subjects of greed, lost integrity and the dangers of blind faith and then the chorus basically wrote itself. The demo was done within 48 hours."

Lynch isn’t alone in thinking The Boss might've have gone too far in his latest career move that seemingly alienates his traditional blue-collar base while playing up to the wealthy he once ridiculed in song.

"I found support for this song in a Philly.com opinion piece called ‘Profiteering On Broadway’ that was published in September when the show was announced," Lynch said. "In the article the author described how the people most likely sitting in the front row would be the Banker’s Hill types that Bruce had once railed against on his late career Wrecking Ball album."

Taking a cue from the Traveling Wilburys and their "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" there are a number of Bruce references on the track that help illustrate the disillusionment expressed by many of his longtime followers.

"For me, I'm a songwriter and an observer of life as it goes on around me," Lynch said of his role as a modern day bard. "This song isn't necessarily from my point of view but it does tell the side of disillusioned fans."

To get the job done Lynch approached former Crossfire Choir frontman Jay Pounders to produce the effort and brought the always in demand Nashville guitarist Nick Johnson on board to add a strong classic rock vibe to the nearly 4 minute slice of protesting pop rock.

"I think Jay and Nick did a fantastic job and we can't wait to do more," Lynch said complimenting his musical mates. "I think Pounders might've have found a new Nashville rock sound with this one. He's probably going to be a very busy man real soon."

I agree prices are high but it is Broadway where they're always high for the hits.

Secondly what this singer doesn't realize cuz he's nowhere near as successful is Bruce isn't making much doing this.  Using round figures the place holds 860.

860 x 500 = 43,000.00 per show

The theater gets its rent and a percentage of the production.

Even though it looks like Bruce doesn't  have many expenses compared to a concert.  There are still quite a few.  If anyone scans the playbill you'll see what I mean.  Security, the union staff at the theater, Bruce's management team, Bruce's regular's of which 35 are listed.  All of them get paid and I don't think they're working for minimum wage.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is Bruce isn't doing this for the money.

IMHO, it's the challenge of trying something new.  Bruce is not afraid of a challenge especially when it's within his own artistic purview.

Remember this isn't a concert.  It's a Broadway show.  Did Whoopi Goldberg, Bernadette Peters or Bette Midler get vilified or roasted cuz they charged more than they did at an arena?  Of course not.

They didn't because it wasn't an arena show.  It was a Play telling a story.  Bruce is telling his story with 15 acoustic songs thrown in.  The songs don't change nor does the story.  This isn't a concert.

And the irony is this guys hoping his song becomes a hit so he can make some big bucks.

OATS -- this is a subject matter worthy to be sung about, that's why we went ahead and put some Nashville muscle behind it.

All one needs to do is look at the ample consternation on the Official BS FB page to see how many fans feel alienated, betrayed, left out, forgotten - you choose the words - they're telling it to him and I'm reflecting that back into the world as an observer.

No hit song here unless the general public wants to actually get back to buying music!

ahhh, so you are personally involved with this endeavor.

Well, I beg to differ.  He is selling the track, correct?  Therefore he will be making money off it.

If he weren't doing it for money, he wouldn't be asking for payment.  The first five shows grossed 2.3 million dollars.    He's doing 80 shows.  They will gross $35 million.  With little to no production costs.   He'll take 20-25 million easily.  But no, he's not doing this for money.  Please,  man.

ok, so I was never great at math.  Maybe  the money's just the icing ...

on the cake.

My take is this..

We're in the midst of some really hard times right now. Downright scary.

In the past, Bruce Springsteen's music helped folks get through times like this.

So...a champagne and caviar Broadway show...about himself...that 95% of people can't access, much less afford...

I'll just leave it at that.

Springsteen has made no secret about liking money—no surprise there, right, almost everyone does, and we all know how little he had growing up and well into his adulthood.

But he's worth somewhere in the neighborhood of a half-billion dollars. What do you think another $35 mill is going to allow him to buy he can't already? You don't think he could get something like that by just going along for the first time with sponsorship or something? Just signing a contract is a hell of a lot easier than the hundreds and hundreds of hours he's going to be putting into this thing.

I was pretty turned off by the Broadway idea, initially, and I think the prices are pretty obscene. But he's an artist trying something new, and that's what most of us claim we want from our artists, even if we don't like the result. (And, of course, a lot of fans are honest about not wanting something new from their favorite artists.) And since Tom Petty's sudden death, I've decided I am a-O-fucking-K with whatever the fuck Bruce Springsteen wants to do artistically whenever the fuck Bruce Springsteen wants to do it. I still might not like the result, but I'll just be glad he's still around to do his thing.

Now I've sold a few things myself in my time, and by the way folks,
There's some t-shirts on your way outside.
Well last night I dreamed of lipstick and tight little cotton shorts
"harder, faster", she breathed.
"one, two, three, four, five"
Ride, sally ride, girl, ride sally ride.

You can buy it, you can try it, it'll help you in bed.
But don't be fooled folks, there's only one.
I forget that guy's name but somebody said
Sell it and they will come boys, sell it and they will come.

Dont kid yourself, Springsteen hasn't been playing to blue collar fans for decades. Most of us arent toiling in the factories for a small hourly wage. An average concert with two tickets, parking etc. can easily push $350+

Going to a Springsteen show has been unaccessable for the characters in his songs since the band got back together. The Broadway run sucks because of the scarcity of the tickets, remember the 'cheap seats' on Broadway are pretty close in cost to the 'cheap seats' on the River Tour.

The way I see it is if Bruce decided to have tickets be on par with the stadium shows, the demand for tickets would be even higher. And the secondary market would be more populated, this would drive down the costs slightly but it would mean fewer tickets got in the hands of fans in the first place. (I think the ticket prices scared away a lot of the resellers)

I hate the whole situation especially as a fan who has been shut out despite working two blocks from the theatre... but ultimately its better that the obscene ticket prices that were inevitable are going to the artist than some sleezebag ticket scalper.

When in Hollywood visit Universal Studios
(Ask for Babs)

"I hate the whole situation especially as a fan who has been shut out despite working two blocks from the theatre... "

So you're a New Yorker now, aye?
