Tom Petty

Down here on E Street, we’re devastated and heartbroken over the death of Tom Petty. Our hearts go out to his family and bandmates. I’ve always felt a deep kinship with his music. A great songwriter and performer, whenever we saw each other, it was like running into a long lost brother. Our world will be a sadder place without him.

Man this cannot be happening. Not Tom Petty please. Our deepest love and condolences to his family and band. A brother and true believer.

RIP . His great jams are interwoven with the past four decades. He was a great rock n roller.

I posted this on my longtime TP messageboard.  It's typically long winded, but from the heart...

Tom Petty.

Where do you start?

Songwriter. The list of great songs is as long as your arm, down the other arm, then down both legs. Listen to Her Heart. Refugee. American Girl. Even The Losers. The Waiting. Stop Dragging My Heart Around. Wildflowers. Free Falling. I Won't Back Down. Mary Janes Last Dance. Southern Accents. You Wreck Me. Into the Great Wide Open. You Don't Know How It Feels. Breakdown. Here Comes My Girl.

How many times have you been in the car, on a beautiful sunny day like today, heard one of these songs on the radio and said "Man that's just a great song". And there are dozens more. "The Best of Everything". "Keeping Me Alive". "Dogs on the Run." "Dreamville". "Ways To Be Wicked". "Down South". Keep digging, there's many more.

His music was bright, defiant, reflective, and humorous (something very much missing in music today). "Let me get to the point, let's roll another joint". Brilliant.

The Heartbreakers. One of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. 4 of the 5 guys originals since 1976 (TP, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair). The only band where the original drummer (Stan Lynch, who I loved) got sacked, and the replacement (Steve Ferrone) I ended up loving even more. I'd put em up against any band. They'll win.

I saw them probably 30 times over the last 40 years. First time in 1981. Last time back in April at jazzfest in New Orleans. And every single one of them was fantastic. Every one. Not a clunker, not even close. The band could play anything, and they were total badasses. Old Fenders, Gibsons, Rickenbackers, beat up old tube amps and Hammond B3 organs. No bullshit.

Tom Petty absorbed The Beatles, The Stones, The Byrds, The Band, The Allman Brothers, Neil Young and Bob Dylan (how could you not love him) and synthesized them into something all his own. I've never spoken to a fellow musician (or anybody, for that matter) that didn't like Tom Petty. When I saw them at the Beacon 4 years ago, they played covers by The Beatles, Booker T and the MGs, the Grateful Dead, The Clash, Little Feat and Sam Cooke. They knew where the good stuff came from.

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash...asked him to play with THEM.

Iconoclast. Always the coolest. Never an awkward moment. A hippie, but not an annoying hippie. Tough, but never bitter or nasty. Completely, utterly authentic.

It's just a huge loss. Whether you've been a fan for 10, 20, 30 or 40 years his music has been the soundtrack of many of our lives.

The other day, I heard "The Best of Everything" on the radio.
Theres a great line in the song that kinda sums it up...

Yeah, its over before you know it
It all goes by so fast
The bad nights take forever
And the good nights don't ever seem to last

God bless Tom Petty
